Does anyone know if BLU-RAY still plays movies in 50hz/fps (for europe) and 60Hz/fps for usa ?
With normal DVD it is 50Hz (and is annoying), but will the BluRay releases be different ? Regards, Rene |

For movies they will be 24 fps as that is what they were "recorded" in. Monitors can handle 24/50/60 fps and some can go higher (for games / computers) Although there is a default for HD broadcasting (in Aus anyway) matching the old PAL frequency. Hopefully they will release new movis in 1080/30p (unsure though if this is in the Blu Ray spec)

NO (Assumption standard PAL or NTSC CRT TV - Not a HD TV) I would imagine the Blu Ray players will do some dodgy PAL and NTSC conversion. At the end of the day if you want to stick with your CRT, stick with DVD (just remember your DVD collection is getting closer to becoming a boat anchor by the day) until the prices of both players and TV's come down. The advantage of Blu Ray will only be seen on a high resolution TV / projector.

Its a HDTV, nut supports only 60fps signal at the HDMI input.
So if the movie is diplayed in 60fps mode, i will be in the clear, otherwise i need a new tv :-( |

The "Grand Alliance" HDTV standard has, as of the last time I read through it a few months ago, no 50 Hz variant.
There are, within the "Grand Alliance" standard: . 720 progressive at 20 frames per second (FPS), 30 FPS and 60 FPS, . 1080 progressive at 24 FPS and 30 FPS, and . 1080i interlaced at 60 fields per second (30 frames per second). But (there's always a "but" isn't there?)... The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) gives these variants as part of its HDTV standard (see ITU-R BT.709-5 for more detail if you want): (note: these are all 1080 x 1920 frame size, the ITU does not seem to have a standard for the 720 x 1280 frame size) . Progressive at 60, 50, 30, 25, and 24 frames per second . Interlaced at 60 and 50 fields per second (30 and 25 frames per second) . Progressive, segmented frame at 30, 25 and 24 frames per second. So... there are at least (as I count them) 13 different variants on what could be ligitimately called "HDTV". Pick your favorite flavor! (Note that this does not even start to get into all the sound variations allowed!) Personally, I wish they had all just picked 1325 x 3114 progressive at 60 FPS like was used in the U.S. military way back in the mid 70s and been done with it. However, that variant was dropped from HDTV standard consideration more than 25 years ago because (at that time) the items that made up the system were extremely expensive (think a few million for the camera and about a million for the display). |
