Drop the prices of Blu-ray players to $200 - 250
That and they bring the price of the movies to what they are similarly to DVD Like $20 for new movies. Its the end. and HD-DVD wouldn't be able to match it. |

eh...ok.
or they could sell bluray players for $1 then everyone and their mothers would buy one...that would be an install base of 350 million in the US alone. I love these "how blu can win" posts. ![]() theyve already won...just waiting for the dead bodies to clear the battlefield. |

I think they are doing a good job so far, slowly lowering their prices, meaning no desperation. Quality is unbeaten by the red group. But yeah a little more affordable players, doesnt have to be under 100 dlls. Keep up the good marketing. The ps3 should sell very good this christmas season, it was a hot expensive product last year, not a lot of people bought it, this season with a cheaper model i am sure it will sell very good, the xbox 360 has been out for awhile so that still makes the ps3 the "newest" system out there.

What i am saying is... that happens and DVD people have a clear choice. Universal would have to fold, way sooner than expected. All the smaller studios that are still on the fence would not worry about anything and it would just be a knockout punch. Paramount gnaw their own hands, because they would still be in the contract. That move would pretty much do what DVD did to DIVX, when it came out.

i agree with the movie price drop..but you cannot get into a price war with Toshiba right now. BECAUSE NOT ANY OF THE CE companies supporting Blu-Ray want to end up out of Money...last time i checked it was about makeing money for your company not giveing away the HARDWARE. That is what exactly the only HD DVD CE company is doing right now Toshiba knows their sunk they are getting whats left of their sales out of these players before the D@MN things are not worth anything. THEY DID NOT SELL ALL LAST YEAR VERY WELL even when it was the lowest costing HD DVD player even now it took a sale like this to even move the D@MN THINGS.

Too many of these kinds of posts. I would like to see one with a very well outlined plan from studios and manufacturers covering marketing, production, distribution, and sales.
Just looking at one tiny aspect isn't going to change the wave of the format battle. |

exactly...the BDA does not even have to drop player prices that drastic to do Damage to Toshiba. Because Toshiba did that all to themselves by pulling this little stunt..the low cost players are great in all but if you are the ONLY company makeing HD DVD players. something is wrong...look what happened with BETA with out the other CE companies supporting your format you have a tough time makeing the format stick..the same thing that happened to BETAMAX is going to happen to HD DVD...

It would be nice to see Blu-ray costs as much as DVD but I don't foresee that ever happening. It's not realistic especially when it costs much more then DVDs to produce... but I do see it possible for BD players to reach that price.
I do like the idea that someone mention about releasing BD movies before DVD comes out. That would motivate people in purchasing a hi-def player knowing you get to see the movies first before it comes out on DVD. |

I think with a good marketing campaign (in order to get those new and confused customers), some good promo's (we got a lot of people from the red group to go blue also) BDA can end this soon.
That bogo deal worked so good, i remember reading a lot on how a lot of people that werent blue, got one, even though they swore on their grave they wouldnt turn, and lets not forget the amazing job Disney is doing with their magical tour. and now most recently the BDA Fair. |

The BDA can continue to do what it has done - maintain a proper business model.
It has the best content and hardware support. How can you lose with that. The only "x factor" was Warner, and the VP just stated that Warner is committed to Blu-ray. If a few hundred thousand HD-DVD players have been sold over the past two years, it is doubtful that a massive surge of 100k A-2 units being sold would make a substantial dent. HD-DVD has played its hand. Toshiba is one person at a poker table. Unless Microsoft starts playing, by adding an internal drive or includes the add-on free for all 360's sold during the holiday period, there is nothing to worry about. Fox, Disney and Warner are happy. The BDA manufactures are happy. The consumer should be happy that Toshiba has now managed to ensure there is no room left to move. As it stands: (1) No manufacture will produce a standalone HD-DVD to compete with the A-2; (2) No studio will go HD-DVD exclusive; and, (3) Toshiba is bled dry (no room left to lower prices) and Microsoft has confirmed that no internal drive will be made. The BDA is sitting back in their cozy home and watching Toshiba beg for change out in the storm. |

All i am trying to say this would be just a knock out punch in Marketing hell even the "ENTRY" Blu-ray players the one they had since the format launched drop those to $250, i am sure its not a great loss at this point, and instead of prolonging this, help Toshiba implode is all. I am not saying start selling Blu-ray movies for a penny and brand new models at $49.99 you know?
To give a metaphor. Toshiba is bleeding right now. This move would make them gush blood and die quicker is all. :P Last edited by Rathael; 11-03-2007 at 05:03 PM. |

they need to actually profit as well. In order to justify the shelf space and cost to stock all those bluray titles they are going to have to be more profitable then the higher volume lower markup DVD titles. Ditto players.

price drops wi not end the format war, if that's all that was needed HD-DVD would have won by now, instead, Blu-ray will win by offering more and better content, special sale helps considerably look at the BOGO, ultimately we now have to wait I believe, if Uliversal or Warner go BD exlcusive, then HD-DVD will be crippled, sure they'll still release movies but not nearly as much as BD can.
