Picture quality looks improved in this new edition of Stargate from Koch Media.

Anyone know if it has english subtitles for the foreign parts of the english audio track?

No, it looks just sharpened to me. Which is typical for such Koch releases.

Looks to be the SC master with a higher bitrate and brightened a bit. The sharpening looks to be the same as the SC too. If someone went and offered it with a new scan or a 4K disc down the line I'd bite but I'll pass on this.

Thats not true!
It has a way better encoding than the old Studiocanal Disc.

But the Film would need a new scan.
But Koch presents the current scan in the best way possible.

The Master itself has some sharpening baked in.
That was not additional sharpening from koch.
Nothing different than on the studiocanal release.

And since when is it typical for Koch releases to use sharpening filters?

Yes, it is. It's clearly the same master simply sharpended, which doesn't equal better pq in my book. (not a word was lost re. encoding)

Since forever? Whenever resp. very often when Koch releases something, using the same dated master as another release, you'll find the Koch being sharpened. Sometimes very subtle, sometimes not so subtle.

The studios who do the Koch encodes (and lots of others - same way - there is never "fake sharpening" mentioned btw) - told me you are basically talking paranoid nonsense. They encode BETTER than the trash releases before, that's all. They have same encoding tech as the praised Fidelity in Motion and others, makes me wonder why THEY are never accused of "fake sharpening". Biased maybe on your side? Yeah, just believe what you want to, just don't state is as "fact", which it isn't.

I just simply sharpened 2 of the US caps (and I am not an image processing guy AT ALL) and cropped both (to hide which is which and to get rid of the slight letterbox ringing, which I couldn't be bothered to avoid/get rid of) :

https://screenshotcomparison.com/com...8599/picture:0

Which one has the clearly better pq? Which one is the previous "trash release"? (And which one is which for that matter.) No additional sharpening, eh? Biased, eh? I just have an eye for pq is all...

EDIT: since screenshotcomparison deleted the comparison...

Koch did not sharpen anything.
The old master itself has some sharpening baked in.

Koch encoded this old master way better than Studiocanal/Lionsgate did. This is the reason its a little bit sharper. And it halso has better grain reproduction cause of that.

Look here: https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=2&x...6&l=0&i=7&go=1

or here: https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=2&x...&l=0&i=11&go=1

Better Encoding, better grain reproduction therefore a little bit sharper.
No additional sharpening.

And you know that how? I guess you're the one who's biased, because you paid too much money for typical German last minute Resteverwertung again.

Im not biased because i had other reasons to buy this thing than picture quality:
It doesnt have the double subtitles anymore in Scenes with foreign language and more important the Directors Cut Scenes have now the correct audio pitch on the german audio track.

And to the other question:
I showed you why there is no additional sharpening with examples. Its visible on the Caps-a-holic shots that there is no additional sharpening applied.

I dont see the reason why you had to write down such a rude statement.....
We never had a problem together. Is it really necessary to write like that?

We won't agree on whether this is sharpened or not. I also showed you why it clearly is. You think there's no additional sharpening. I think otherwise.

I do apologize, if I came across as rude, but suggesting being biased isn't rude in my book. I didn't perceive it that way either when someone else called me biased here. I found it ridiculous. And Resteverwertung isn't rude either - it's simply what I think this release is and I don't sugarcoat.

Also, you having other reasons to buy this is exactly what causes bias. And I on the other hand have nothing against Koch in general at all.

Any 'additional sharpening' would show up here:
https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=3&x...&l=1&i=11&go=1

It does not. Not that I think the clueless will understand.

Having written that I am sure a brand new scan would look superior.

You were in luck, in fact, it sold out just a day or so after I got yours. But they'll offer the non-exclusive one on their shop instead soon.

Depending on what kind of filter-chain was used (e.g. dering/dehalo filter), sharpening can be done without noticeable ringing.

While I'm not gonna comment on this release specifically, something that I've noticed on caps-a-holic is that their screenshots of Koch BD releases since 2019 are often sharper than releases by other distributors. Often the chroma is also positioned differently (often hard to spot, but noticeable if you split screenshot to YCbCr components in an image editor).

I believe the sharpness is from the source master as there are some edge halos visible at times. This new encode just preserves detail which was filtered away in previous encodes. In any case it's the best it's ever looked so far.

It's now available from Amazon UK for £23.89

Thank you.
Just to confirm... this release has the original subtitles (in English) for the scenes that involve non-English speaking???
Are they player generated or on the picture???
Thank you!
