This movie from the trailer looks really good. Don't understand all the bad reviews....but then again I take movie reviews with a grain of salt.

If you haven't seen the movie how can you understand bad or good review?

Saw this at SXSW this year. Wasn't sure what to expect but ended up really loving it. Its not perfect but it offers an interesting story that is heightened by it's visuals, atmosphere, and score.

Looking forward to picking this up.

Not totally loving the cover or the price...or the barebones release, but oh well.

I don't really like the cover at all. Even if it is something different.

I am not expecting much but will give it a look.

I may very well pick this up when some used copies hit Amazon. There aren't very many reviews out there, but overall it's getting slammed as laughably pretentious, a cliche of an art film. Setting that aside for a minute, the trailer intrigues me, so I'd like to check it out and see what it has for me. Knowing that it's essentially Gosling's vision, good or bad, I want to see if there's anything there to connect with.

Someone,somewhere...should do a steelbook for this title. The imagery alone is astounding and it's had some great posters to use.im in love with this film so I'm biased

Well it certainly looks like Nicolas Refn rubbed off on Gosling quite a bit.

Also interesting, the same DoP, Benoit Debie, who shot Spring Breakers.

I'm in.

Agreed about a steelbook. That would be great. You're right--there was some really awesome posters for this movie. That's why I'm sort of upset with the cover art. I feel like there were better options to choose from.

If you liked Debie's work in Spring Breakers, I believe you'll like this as well. SB is one of my favorite movies visually and while different, this film was also quite beautiful and colorful.

Damn, they really aren't banking on the theatrical release at all. One month later and it's on blu ray?

And judging by the back artwork...this is a bare bones release with no slip? Yikes. Hopefully it reaches like $12 or something.

So does anyone have any feedback about the movie? I'm always interested in any Gosling is involved with, but need to know what I'm getting into first.

I absolutely loved it, but it isn't for everyone.

My review if anyone is interested:

Quote:
I remember that one night, in the middle of a summer heat wave, when I first noticed it. Looking out my window, the trees seemed to talk. The breeze seemed to do nothing to subdue the radiating warmth of that August day. And yet, the trees flowed in a way that was as natural and eerie as anything that I'd seen at my young age. I remember my backyard, teeming with life and strange yelps and screams. It seemed like a jungle to me. Now, the backyard is empty. No children run around in it, no dogs and cats chase each other within its boundaries, and no midnight strolls are there to bring out the ethereal qualities of the fallen branches and the whispering wind between the misty air.

The house as a whole is empty. My family and I moved away to a nicer home, leaving its tattered walls and its creaky charm to slowly crumble to pieces. It's sad to be sure, but there's also something beautiful about letting go. Lost River, the magnificent first feature from Ryan Gosling, is a haunting fairy-tale that delves into the magic of the young and the reality of the old. The story of a family being torn from their home is a frightening and (sadly) all too true situation nowadays. In a feat of brilliance, Gosling takes that personal dilemma and weaves it together with a fairy-tale of lush qualities and horrific beauty.

With a fantastic cast consisting of Christina Hendricks, Iain De Caestecker, Saoirse Ronan, Matt Smith, Eva Mendes, BEN F*CKING MENDELSOHN, and Barbara Steele (the true Queen B); the film is full to the brim with performances that sell every moment of pristine weirdness and shadowy humanism. The true standouts are Hendricks and Mendelsohn, with their scenes together bursting with tension and danger that oozes of unconventional film-noir. In a way, their relationship drives the whole story, which at its core, discusses innocence versus reality.

And even then, this film isn't that simple. Often frustrating and consistently beguiling, Lost River thrives on the surreal and the unknown. However, unlike the works of Lynch or Refn (which are apparently "influences"), Gosling always keeps reality in focus. This combination between the strange and the ordinary is as fascinating and beautifully done as anything that I've seen in years, but it definitely isn't for everyone. You could say It's a Noe film mixed with Malickian overtones and Argento stylings, but even that doesn't truly explain the potency of this work. It's a true original, one that dives into a haunting and mystical underbelly that is absolutely mesmerizing and gorgeous.

It is with the thrilling combination of Benoit Debie's cinematography, Ryan Gosling's direction, and Johnny Jewel's sweetly charming synthy score that the film truly comes together; crafting a visual/aural experience that is simply stunning to watch and exuberant to listen to. The neon, the blaring bass, the lullabies softly whispering, the fog, the crumbling landscapes; the film is a jaw-dropping experience.

But in spite of all of that, I felt for these people. Gosling's film digs into the bonds of family in a very unconventional way, and its effectiveness stems from the artful storytelling. Like a story that your crazy uncle would tell your kids, like a poem found in the middle of the woods; Lost River is a fairy-tale that enthralls and crawls under your skin. It is comprised of images that are still stirring around in my head, and soon, they'll sink into my subconscious, settling down to stay. What a film.

5/5

It's not nearly as bad as the reviews imply. It is derivative and wears its influences on its sleeve, but it is quite stunning visually at times and the soundtrack is excellent. Gosling has a cinematic eye, but his writing skills need some work. I enjoyed it for the most part, and I'm interested to see where he goes from here.

I though this was very good! If Gosling makes more of these types of flicks then HELL YEAH il be one of his biggest fans. Its a stunning looking movie and yes its not for everyone but hey if your going to make something that dont fit the norm for Hollywood then you cant expect everyone to love it.

I mentioned it in the thread on the Movies board, but Alamo Drafthouse locations will be screening this movie on April 16th followed by a livestream Q&A with Ryan Gosling.

Having been to other films where they did the live stream I HIGHLY recommend it if you have a chance.
