I recently purchased a Panasonic DMP-BDT330 but returned it because while playing blu-rays the drive would be too loud in my opinion for around the first 20 minutes into a blu-ray movie. There was also a high pitched whine to it. After 20 minutes the disc spinning got quieter, 30 minutes later it got quieter again, to a level I could tolerate, and about 1 hour into a movie the disc spinning was very quiet. It was like this for every blu-ray disc I watched (2 blu-rays) on it. I didn't bother watching more blu-rays on it and returned it. I also had a Sony BDP-S5100 before this one and returned it because sometimes the casing would make a buzzing vibration noise when started to play a blu-ray until I touched the top of the player, which I'm convinced that it was the casing of that player that was vibrating, causing that buzzing noise. I still found that player too loud in my opinion as well.
I"m now resorting to using my PC connected to my TV through my receiver for playing blu-rays. The blu-ray drive in my PC is quiet during a whole movie on blu-ray with no high pitched spinning noises either. Giving up on watching blu-rays is not the answer I"m looking for because I have a growing collection of blu-rays and I prefer the image quality over streaming. Now I've been considering purchasing an OPPO BDP-103 because it looks like it's built with quality construction in mind. Does the casing on it sometimes vibrate during playback? Is it loud for the first 20 minutes of playing a blu-ray movie? Does it have a high pitched whine while spinning a blu-ray? |

I've never heard much of anything from either of my Oppos, 93 or 103. Except maybe for the drawer opening or closing. They are solid units. No fan noise or anything during playing.
(Wish I could say the same for my tv and dvr. Oh, and my rarely used hd-dvd player.) |

while i don't own the 103 i can speak to oppo since i own an 83, 93 & 105. for the money, for what they do, for all they do, oppo is the best machine in it's class for the dollar and possibly twice what it cost too. after getting oppo, i have never owned another brand of standalone player or universal blu-ray player since. if you have done your research, you would know all about the 103, there is tons of info out there on it, tons of reviews, tons of awards and tons & tons of happy owners. your answer is out there; the good and bad too. put in some time and research it and you will have more info than you care to read. best of luck to you. |

PCFan has a 32" tv. He would not notice a difference in picture quality from an inexpensive bluray player to a very expensive bluray player. PCFan tried out many blu-ray players last year and did not like them at all because of the noise they made. Its kind of silly that you want to spend $500 to have a quiet bluray player.
As you stated that your pc blu-ray drive is quiet during movie playback, if I were you I would stick with it or try out a LG BP330 bluray player. This LG bluray player has plenty of good reviews from amazon and Best Buy. |

A few days ago I bought the Sony BDP-S6200. So far I'm satisfied with it, and I found it quiet while testing out a few blu-rays on it. I didn't buy it for streaming purposes though, just for playing blu-rays and the occasional DVD if I have no choice.

Switching from my PS3 to the Oppo was a revelation. The Oppo is quiet as a tomb (although lately from time-to-time it has made some noise which does concern me) whereas the PS3, especially with 3D discs, sounds like a jet turbine (and doesn't output 7.1 with 3D). My display somewhat nullifies the quiet advantage though with its cooling fans audible during the quietest scenes.

Thank gawd I updated that dvr, the old one was awful, the new one is quieter than the oppos. TV (and currently unplugged hd-dvd player), still noisy, but now I know what is TV and what was old dvr, so not so hard to ignore TV fan noise most of the time. |
