Default Babylon 5 or Star Trek DS9

Babylon 5 or Star Trek DS9

Which is your favorite?

I'm always wondering about that because back in the day it seems to really be or the one or the other while I always loved them both.

Absolutely love Babylon 5, but to me DS9 is yet another step above.

To be more precise, B5 was really shining during the Shadows story arc, which was (mostly) during seasons 2, 3 and 4.
DS9 was interesting from season 2, quickly found its pace during season 3, and with the Dominion war (season 4-7) it practically never let me down, including with most "filler" episodes.
All in all as well, DS9 (despite a longer run) had less painful standalone eps than B5 to me.

thats two for the lost their marbles category

B5 was epic, ds9 ripped off the babylon 5 concept straczynski pitched to the network then fit it into the star trek post tng mold.... not saying it wasn't better then voyager and close to if not on par with TNG. Although i do agree some of the standalone episodes were turds, the shadow arc along with the psycore and other underlying themes not to mention the movies blow away the wussy arc of the prophets

Not even close: Deep Space Nine

I'll take it one step further: it's my favourite sci-fi television series. For sheer replay value, I'll put it ahead of The Next Generation. For whatever reason, I couldn't latch onto Babylon 5, despite a solid cast.

Few years back I would have chosen Babylon 5, after that, cannot choose but lately I find myself in favor of DS9! I still love B5 also but DS9 is a little bit ahead. I've just watched B5 again and now I am in season 3 of DS9. I guess with repeat watching DS9 keeps getting a little bit more ahead for me.

I enjoy both show and did when they were on live. I always considered DS9 the better written show but B5 is prolly more fun. Its amazing how many parallels there r with the two shows. My favorite one is the twin fates of Terry Farell and Claudia Christian.

TNG & DS9 to me are totally different TV shows, TNG really was a 1 hour show while DS9 was one huge arc story [like B5] from season 3 on. B5 & DS9 were very similar in more ways then one so for me B5 vs DS9 is the better comparison.

For me it's B5 but it's very close.

You have to remember also that DS9 is part of a huge franchise that had a lot of support from the parent studio.

B5 had none of this and lived season to season and still put out a great show.

The story ARC was also rushed to be done in 4 seasons as Straczynski didn't know if he'd get another season. The final episode was actually filmed at the end of season 4, but season 5 was greenlit very late so they hastily made another episode and kept the finale for the next season.

That's why season 5 is somewhat weaker than the previous 3.

Anyway they are both great and I gladly own both on DVD

Indeed, quite correct there with all your remarks. It's a great achievement, creating B5 with the recources JMS had. DS9 did have it "easier", bigger budget and that shows but all in all, I love them both too and of course also own both series on DVD. [still secretly hoping I could someday replace them with Blu Ray]

Well i've heard because of the way they were filmed it's unlikely they'll be upgraded to Blu Ray.

Yeah heard that too but still, read an article a few months ago on tvshowsondvd.com and there they suggested they're finally looking if there is a possibility for a blue ray release! If it's possible for TNG, I'm hoping for DS9 & B5 as well. But I know, it's still reaching!

Well that is interesting.

It'll be a ton of work to redo all the effects for all 7 seasons especially when they were generally more advanced than the original series.

Unfortunately I wouldn't count on it happening for B5 though.

Voting is no longer enabled, but I would cast my vote for babylon 5. I enjoyed both very much, but B5 was more character driven and dark. DS9 was late to the dark party until they finally had the Federation at war and the story because dark and the character driven stories rivaled B5 at times.

Can't lose with either series.
