Right now only Sony does this, but I actually like that they do.
For some recent films I've been on the fence about if I want to get them in 3D or 4K (for example: Fantastic Beasts was conceived in 3D but also mastered in 4K) and I'm really glad that I can get Billy Lynn's halftime walk in high frame rate 4K *and* 3D 24p to compare. I know I am way more likely to pre-order a movie I like if 4K and 3D are both included. Otherwise I am going to wait for reviews to see which is more worthwhile. I am worried that 3D is being phased out, not just in TVs but on home media too. Trolls received a 4K edition but no 3D edition. Disney's record with 3D has been spotty for years now. The Lego Movie only offered 3D with a more expensive collector's set, and the Lego Batman movie only has 2D and 4K versions announced but no 3D in sight (even though reviews of the 3D effects are positive). I know I would rather buy 4K + 3D than no 3D available at all. What do you guys think? |
