Default U2: Rattle and Hum (Blu-ray)

U2: Rattle and Hum Blu-ray

Reviewed by Peter M. Bracke
Quote:
"I am not sure what my expectations were, but I actually think 'Rattle and Hum' looks narrowly better on Blu-ray. But first I'll get my complaints out of the way that apply to both formats. 'Rattle and Hum' is a severely grainy, messy film, and the source material suffers unnecessarily from age and neglect..."
Quote:
"However, doing a direct comparison of three scenes -- the early number "Exit," the band's visit to Graceland, and finally "With or Without You," which again was shot in color -- I found the Blu-ray to be somewhat cleaner at times."
Quote:
"Unlike the video, there is little to fault with 'U2: Rattle and Hum' in the audio department. All of the film's gargantuan concert sequences sound pretty fantastic, with the kind of attention to fine detail that marks the best live music recordings."

That's the way it's supposed to be! It's "artistic" grain
Isn't this title AVC? I read that La Gata (del Disco Grande) said it was, on HD DVD. Supossedly because VC-1 choked on the grain.

I believe that it is AVC on HD DVD.

Though Paramount seems to have done new encodes for other BDs in MPEG2 so it will be interesting to see.

I found this today in a thrift shop.

Maybe it's a sign that Paramount Presents will reissue it or it will get a 4K release...

Next year will be its 35th Anniversary. I was stunned beyond measure the band let the 30th pass without much recognition so I have all hopes pinned on 2023.

After revisiting my DVD copy, I came here hoping for some rerelease news. Hard to believe this one is still just sitting in the vault.

I'm not even a huge U2 fan. Some of the greatest concert cinematography ever. Jordan Cronenweth did Stop Making Sense and the color footage here. The B&W footage by Robert Brinkmann is gorgeous too.
