My son just got a PS3 slim. When he plays a game (The Last of Us).The AVR(Onkyo NR709) displays "direct". When I press the display button on the AVR remote it says Multichannel PCM. Is this correct to show Multichannel PCM instead of DD or DTS?
The PS3 is connected to the AVR via HDMI and the AVR is connected to the TV by HDMI |

Yes that is correct. You can set the PS3 to bitstream and you have the game set to put out 5.1 or 7.1 PCM your AVR will show PCM. Try a movie with DTS MA it should show DTS MA or DTS Master Audio.

Its both correct and possibly incorrect at the same time. For your receiver to inform you that it is receiving Multi-CH PCM that is correct as per a setting in the PS/3. However the term Direct on the display indicates that you are using the Direct sound field. This sound field will by pass any audio correction and Possibly even the bass management of the receiver. So If you have run audyssey room correction on your receiver then the sound curve that was created by your receiver is not being used when on the direct mode. Now as I said that is possibly incorrect as it depends on what you like in terms of audio signature. The receiver should dislplay Multi-CH or PCM or LPCM depending on your receiver model if it is processing the audio as the receiver is designed to.
Hope that helps T |
