Germany The Prodigies 3D Blu-ray (2011) [Region Free]

The German edition from Capelight includes English and German audio options and is Region Free. The French edition from Warners is French language only and may be Region B locked.

I figured this may as well have its own thread, I was planning on rewatching it soon as enough time has passed for me to have forgotten all about it since my original viewing.

The German Prodigies 3D steel book has English audio and an FSK 16 rating on the cover.

When I purchased the title in 2014, there was a FSK 16 removable sticker and it also came with a lenticular cover-magnet that fits securely on the front.

It appears to have a non-steelbook release too:

I've hovered over this and had it in my Amazon saved for later section for many years. Not being a big animation fan has always made me hesitate.

A review on Amazon says this is a terrible auto conversion and should be avoided. That got me to wondering, does the 3-D have warping like The Last Unicorn? Some people are content to see depth but warping around objects is really distracting and takes me out of the movie.

I used to have it, the movie is ok but the 3D was quite weak.

I just now stumbled across this one. Any more thoughts on the 3D and/or film itself? Trailer looks interesting.

I found The Prodigies to be a disappointment, including the 3D. To cut to the chase, the vast majority of the film is flat or very mild in terms of stereo. There are conversion errors in the 3D presentation that suggest an automated process, but there are a few sequences in the film which do look stronger and may have been rendered stereoscopically, so it seems like a variety of techniques were used to produce the 3D. In most cases where I expected good 3D (e.g. falling from the sky, explosions of debris, slow motion, items close to camera etc), it failed to deliver. Quite literally the lenticular magnet on the steelbook has better 3D than the same sequence in the movie, which is presented flat with no depth.

As for the actual content of the film, a few moments were interesting and the concept was okay, but right from the start I knew that it was going to rub me the wrong way. It breaks the mold but not in a sense I personally appreciate in a film like this
[Show spoiler](it includes many instances of abuse and assult of minors, including a sexual one, all of which I found very unpleasant even with the doughy animation)
. Truly a perplexing movie - the subject matter is absolutely not for children, but the animation and story are not sophisticated or appealing enough to justify its the extreme nature so I don't see it being enjoyed by many adults either. I seriously cannot understand how it got financed in the first place, and with a rather high budget too! Did investors write blank checks after learning that the script was adapted from a novel??
