I'm in the US and have been looking around for a region-free player lately. After doing some research, I'd like to buy one that, ideally, fits the following specifics:
1. Plays Blu-ray discs from all regions (A, B and C). 2. Plays DVDs from all regions (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9). 3. Has the built-in capability to convert between PAL and NTSC. 4. Is region free via a hardware modification. 5. Has an internal modification (not external). 6. Will remain region-free even after firmware upgrades. 7. Has 3D playback capability (preferably). 8. Delivers very strong picture & sound during playback. 9. Switches among regions relatively easily. 10. Comes already modified. 11. Has a price that is not too much higher than the region-locked version of the same player, relatively speaking. 12. Comes with some type of warranty (for a couple years or so). 13. Can be purchased for about $300 or less. Basically, I'm looking for a very good value. I want solid, reliable technical and functional quality, but it doesn't have to be top of the line, either. After reading some reviews (pro and user) online. I'm thinking of buying the region-free version of the Sony BDP-S5100 player from Bombay Electronics.
