USA When Björk Met Attenborough (2013) - January 21, 2014

Quote:
Award-winning musician Björk and legendary broadcaster and naturalist Sir David Attenborough have admired each other's work for years but this is the first time they have discussed their mutual love of music and the natural world on screen. In this remarkable documentary, Björk explores our unique relationship with music and discovers how technology might transform the way we engage with it in the future. At the heart of the film is Biophilia, Björk's cutting-edge music project that explores where nature, music and technology meet. David Attenborough explains how music exists in the natural world and speaks about his own passion for music. Author and professor of neurology and psychiatry Oliver Sacks explains the extraordinary and beneficial effects music has on our brains and explains why performing and engaging with music is something all of us should take more seriously.

Default When Bjork Met David Attenborough

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/When-...Blu-ray/91767/

I received the Blu-ray copy from Bjork's site. The only thing on disc is the 48 minute documentary. Nothing else. 1080p MPEG2, Dolby 2.0 audio, no subtitles.

The disc from bjork.com is Region B.

I tested it on Region A and C settings, and with both the disc automatically stops and won't play. It doesn't state anything about region coding on the Bjork website so don't say I didn't warn you.

Now, the disc is available in the US via Amazon and other places, but is the US disc different? I would think so...

It's highly unlikely that a U.S. retailer would sell a disc that's not playable in Region A players without at least fair warning. (Edit: If the Blu-ray.com picture is any indication its U.S. release is via Sony Music, meaning it's almost certainly a different pressing.) And even in the unlikely event it were to happen, I'd find it strange if Amazon U.S. didn't at least live up to the CS standards of Amazon UK, who offered refunds on the UK version of The Jungle Book when they advertised it as region-free only to have Disney region-lock it to Regions B & C at the last minute. (They didn't even ask for a return from U.S. customers, but I certainly wouldn't expect Amazon U.S. to do the same for Americans. )

The "Sony Music" label on the blu-ray.com page seems to be for the Japanese release (even says Made In Japan). On the actual Amazon page, the picture is slightly different. But when I checked, the UPC of the US disc is different from that of the bjork.com disc.

Well, we know there are three UPC/EAN codes, so my guess is that there is a North American release, a Europe/Australia release and the Japanese Sony Music release.

If you go to Björk's site shop, the products are sold by GBP currency, and the pictures of the covers clearly show the UK EAN.

So if you need a Region A edition, I think as long as you buy the version here, you should be fine:

As for picture quality, disappointing.

The TV special as the norm for UK, was shot at 25fps, but the blu-ray is in 24fps. But instead of slowing down the framerate as usual for BBC documentaries, it's a "PAL to NTSC" transfer, so ghosting appears when things move around. Really wish they could have kept it at 25fps so it wouldn't strain the eyes so much.

Got my copy today and have just watched it. I agree on the disappointing picture quality. Interesting documentary, but an eye straining experience.
