Surely I can't be the only one on the forum who listens to the oldies and the goodies right? Off the top of my head, ten of my favorite albums and their most defining feature(s) are:
Magic Sam - West Side Soul (guitar/powerful vocals) Otis Rush - Right Place Wrong Time (guitar) Paul Butterfield Blues Band - East-West (guitar/harmonica) [their s/t and Pigboy Crabshaw are also excellent] Albert King - Live Wire-Blues Power (guitar) Willie Dixon - I Am the Blues (laid-back, bass-driven/piano) Memphis Slim - At the Gate of Horn (horns/piano) Charlie Musselwhite - Stand Back (also laid-back, piano/harmonica-driven) Buddy Guy - A Man and the Blues (guitar) Albert Collins - Ice Pickin (guitar) Luther Allison - Love Me Mama (guitar) I guess I'm pretty fond of the Chicago blues style. I saw Buddy Guy/B.B. King a couple months back and the former blew the latter out of the water. Some of these guitarists make sounds and play the guitar in ways I didn't think possible. |
