Default Flight: the genius of birds Blu-ray

Flight: the genius of birds Blu-ray

Flight: the genius of birds was released on the Blu-ray format on June 11th 2013. This is ILLUSTRA MEDIA’s second Blu-ray release (Their first Blu-ray release was Metamorphosis: the beauty & design of butterflies back on July 6th 2011). This is a documentary that shows in detail the scientific evidence for the intelligent design of birds. Perhaps if I have time in the future I might write a brief user review regarding this Blu-ray disc title that I am awaiting to arrive. This Blu-ray has a list price of $22.95.

FLIGHT: The Genius of Birds marks the launch of Illustra Media’s new documentary series The Design of Life. Each episode explores a different realm of the animal kingdom and the remarkable biological systems that make life on Earth possible.

Filmed in North America, England, Peru, Greenland, and Antarctica, FLIGHT probes the mysteries and mechanisms of a bird’s anatomy, instinct, and embryology to reveal stunning provisions essential for life in the skies.

You’ll marvel at a hummingbird’s unique skeletal, muscular and metabolic systems—all vital to its spectacular aerial acrobatics…

The endurance and navigational abilities of an Arctic tern as it travels from pole to pole during the longest migration on the planet…

The instinctive strategies that enable a flock of 300,000 European starlings to evade predators at break-neck speeds…

The elaborate network of a million component parts that make a feather an aerodynamic masterpiece. And much more.

The poet William Blake wrote that to see an eagle in the air is to observe “a portion of genius.” In FLIGHT the ingenuity of a bird’s behavior and biology showcase unmistakable evidence for design, purpose, and plan. They are displays of genius best explained by intelligence and mind.”

Brief user review of Flight: the genius of birds Blu-ray

Flight: the genius of birds is volume one in the Design of Life series. Flight: the genius of birds was released on the Blu-ray format on June 11th 2013. This is ILLUSTRA MEDIA’s second Blu-ray release (Their first Blu-ray release was Metamorphosis: the beauty & design of butterflies back on July 6th 2011). Flight: the genius of birds on Blu-ray was very interesting to watch. This science documentary about birds contains strong scientific evidence that birds were designed. The design of the bird species is much more complex when compared to a 747 airplane. Intelligent design videos are not Christian or religious videos since they never once mention God. In fact, some people in the intelligent design movement believe that some alien life form created life on earth instead of God. Therefore, my point is that intelligent design videos like Flight are popular among some atheists that choose not to believe in evolution and they are also popular for many of the different world religious that believe in gods or a God. Intelligent design videos are also viewed at some secular schools if the school has a policy to allow videos that show evidence for intelligent design. Many secular schools only allow the theory of evolution to be taught and discussed in the classroom with no room for intelligent design or creation discussions.

While watching Flight I enjoyed learning about the awesome engineered body of birds while following the life cycle of a bird. Toward the end of the video, evidence is presented that explains why the theory of evolution is not possible scientifically.

*** Video comments ***

The Flight Blu-ray disc was professionally stamped in a Blu-ray factory. This Blu-ray disc is a single layer with a total of 19GB used out of 25GB. Flight uses the MPEG-4/AVC codec with a bit range of around 11Mbps-35Mbps depending on the scene being shown in the documentary. Instead of being 1080P quality, this documentary is 1080i HD quality. Flight has a beautiful 1080i MPEG-4/AVC encode with video bit rates around the high 29Mbps range and peaks into the 35Mbps range for some scenes. This 1080i Flight documentary video looks better when compared to the 1080i documentaries that I have seen on some HD cable and HD satellite channels. The level of detail of the birds in 1080i HD is amazing. Color quality was also excellent. The documentary is also encoded with English subtitle option for those that like or need subtitles.

*** Audio comments ***

This Flight Blu-ray has both a lossy English 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack at 448kbps and a lossy 2.0 Dolby Digital stereo soundtrack at 192kbps (Same audio quality as the 480i DVD release). The big disappointment is that there is no 5.1 PCM or 5.1 lossless soundtracks. PCM and lossless audio tracks are bit for bit exactly the same as the studio master soundtrack. This is Illustra Medias second Blu-ray release and some consumers that purchase Blu-ray titles will not purchase a Blu-ray title that lacks a lossless audio track. Lossless audio tracks are the norm that is found on 99% of all Blu-ray titles in 2013. In the future Illustra Media should release all future Blu-ray titles with lossless audio tracks.

Overall the 5.1 lossy Dolby Digital surround sound mix sounded very good for a documentary video. I have seen some low budget movies that are mixed with worse soundtracks. Flight had a good surround sound music mix for some scenes and I was very impressed with the subwoofer deep bass channel for certain scenes in this Flight documentary. The only complaint I have with the soundtrack is that there is no lossless audio quality offered.

*** Extras ***

This Flight Blu-ray has a total of six 1080i MPEG-4/AVC film trailers to watch in 2.0 Dolby Digital stereo (192kbps). Currently so far only two of the film documentaries out of six have been released on the Blu-ray format. I was disappointed that this Flight Blu-ray did not offer any other extra features. The other Blu-ray title called Metamorphosis: the beauty & design of butterflies on Blu-ray has over an hour of extra features.

*** Conclusion ***

Flight: the genius of birds on Blu-ray is an excellent science documentary that shows the life cycle and the intelligence of the bird species. The 1080i HD MPEG-4/AVC encode has a good picture quality and the 5.1 lossy Dolby Digital soundtrack is enjoyable to listen too (However a lossless audio track would have been ideal). It was disappointing that this Blu-ray title only offers six trailers for extras. More extra features would have been ideal. Those that are interested in learning about the intelligence design of birds will most likely enjoy this documentary.
