Thumbs up September 24th User Interface Pictures

Taken from the EU Community Manager 'Envisager' here.

Click the spoiler tag under each shot to see how that screen looked in previously released direct-feed official media.

More of the UI, including how you quickly navigate the top-level categories XMB-style can be seen in Shuhei Yoshida's Gamescom introduction, demonstrating how you join a multiplayer session from watching a live-video-stream of it.

Looks very nice! It looks clean and easy to navigate. I just hope over time they don't clutter it up.

I like the interface. I think it doesn't help though that they keep using Knack as one of their main images. IMO they should use some visually impressive in a still shot like Killzone, etc.

Loving the look of it. Can't wait for the app to be released.

Nice change from the PS3 interface... and should be familiar enough to Xbox users so they're not too stymied if they pick up a PS4. Nice!

I think the speech/thought bubbles in 'Messages' and legacy icons for trophy level, PS+ and maybe even the trophy cup icons need updating most but some people may be attached to those trophy icons.

Visually it looks nice but it also reminds me of the PS Store update which looks nice but is a mess when it comes to functionality compared to the old store.

If I broadcast something on the ps4, can people watch it even if they don't have a ps4? Like either on their phone or on their ps3?

Yes, through the streaming service you're using (Twitch, Ustream, niconico, YouTube possibly) or the official PlayStation app it looks like.

Very slick....

But in all this time, Henry Bayle has not increased his trophy count....

Really? It looks virtually the same to me other than the different back ground color, which I'm sure you can change.

I'm 99.9% certain you can customize the screens in a variety of ways.

Yeah I guess.

Look at the text resolution on the darker blue/black.

When booting up a 2006 BD player such as this,

Well I just don't get why they went with that color.

Envisager posted one more picture (no high res yet) of the What's New screen on twitter.

(September)

(July)

(February)

This shows one of the biggest evolutions, even from the July shot to now:
  • Larger spacing between each 'tile'
  • Selection highlighter now has a small gap between it and the tile making it clearer what's highlighted
  • Video description text is now on a translucent overlay, 'BROADCAST' simplified to 'LIVE'
  • Sarah Greene is broadcasting KNACK --> Sarah Greene started broadcasting KNACK - changed the wording to sound less robotic
  • Henry Bayle is now friends with 6 people --> Henry Bayle made friends with 6 people - again, less robotic, sounds friendlier (but they're wasting space with the layout in this tile now)
  • They darkened the grey icons describing what each tile activity is - clearer at a glance
  • More descriptive grey icon for shared video clips, made friends icon has tick instead of +
  • Dark blue instead of grey for the larger tile title areas so it's easier to focus on the different parts of the tile
  • You can see when people change their avatar (hopefully it's intelligent enough to only show the most recent change)
  • If a friend 'likes' multiple games, it can make one tile split with multiple game icons together
  • There's no indicator for comments made any more, PS Vita has this feature so they probably forgot to include it for the most recent image

It's bright and clear. Fresh and inviting to ones eyes.

But again, you can always change it.

Definitely like the lighter, brighter default theme.

Still looks too chaotic but UI design is extremely difficult. I imagine the tweaks and changes we get within a year make it even better.

I care more about functionality/intuitiveness and response anyways.

I can't think of too many XMB changes to the UI of PS3 but remember a chunk full of Xbox 360 UI updates.

Do you think with PS4 if they want to do a UI update it will be easier?

I'm cool with the color. I'll change it all black.
