Default Old UK TV adverts!

I've been having a nostalgic trip through UK television adverts from the 80s/90s and having so much fun. Some of them had the best music written for them.

https://youtu.be/gSdann3ugww

https://youtu.be/mollEpGRaZw

I've been sticking my favourites into a playlist. Anybody got any other good ones they can't forget?

A great topic for a thread, and you already have many of them in your playlist.

A couple more from the 80's - this one is for Country Life English Butter - basically a short compilation of some of their earlier adverts:

And a Christmas advert I remember very well for Heineken:

And I'm old enough to remember these classic "alien" adverts for Smash mashed potato from the 1970's:

There was one advert which, whenever I saw it, it creased me up. It was for Business Pages (a red book with a black logo). The music played in the background was You're More Than a Number in My Little Red Book by The Drifters.

There were two scenes. One was of a woman in her office, her papers flying about the room. The other was of a demolition expert (the actor playing him I'd seen on the sitcom Brush Strokes), about to demolish a brick cone tower, but instead demolishing a block of flats. The look on his face was priceless.

The state of adverts now - they used to be fun/funny (as those above show): now I just change channels when they come on.

As a kid growing up in the 70's, I remember it used to be said that the adverts were sometimes more entertaining than the programmes themselves.

I've definitely noticed that older adverts were more entertaining and a lot more memorable. They also seem to look better/more expensive.

A couple of adverts for Cinzano seen in the 1970's/early 80's featuring Leonard Rossiter and Joan Collins. They actually made quite a few of them as I recall.

I know I shouldn't, but I usually fast-forward through today's advert breaks. But they're nowhere near as good as the ads from decades ago (like R-Whites Lemonade and the Shake 'n Vac lol).

Today's TV adverts in general are awful. I'm sure we all have our own opinions on the worst ones, but for me, I totally detest those meerkat adverts. They've been running for too long and they're not even funny - just irritating. I used to think those Go Compare ads were bad enough, but I'd rather sit through them than those bloody meerkats!

I do remember the R-Whites Lemonade advert very well. In fact it featured on a compilation of vintage TV adverts shown a few years back on Channel 4, I think it was, along with the Smash Potato ads and several others from around the same period.

haha nice
like the first two, especially the first one, even as an American that one really brings me back to the 80s. The McDonalds one is cool too, although it seems quite different from the American McDonalds commercials. It seems like wide brimmed hats were a big thing for UK girls in the 80s. Don't recall that part so much in the US.

I was looking over some of the commercial collections from the US in the 80s up on youtube and list of them that I found, fun stuff, quite a time capsule. Makes me now kick myself that I was often so careful to delete out all commercials when I made VHS tapes back then.... arrrrr. If I only knew! Sometimes they are a better time capsule to the times than what I was taping.

a ton from the US from I list I just came across (not sure if these work for you or not, being from the US, but probably still good? this is the only thread about 80s commercials on this whole site I think):

and ahh man forgot a little just how utterly upbeat, fun-loving, light-hearted and often hot 80s commercials often tended to be
these bring back some memories!

However, I had lots of TDK and Sony tapes and never really had any problems with these, even on recordings made more than a decade ago. However despite that, it's still a great TV ad though.

From memory I used both Scotch and TDK, but I think my 'goto' brands were Maxell and Memorex as they were often the best combo of price vs quality.

Of course none of the others made such memorable ads though.....

The best tapes I had were the Sony Pro-X ones which came in a hard case. They were very expensive (I think nearly a tenner each back in the late 80's), but I managed to get a load of them when I was still in camera retailing at that time. I found a photographic supplier which actually stocked them, and I remember getting a stack of them at cost price, which was considerably less than the high street price.

Cinzano Airplane Commercial - YouTube

Nobody ever spots that it's Marina Sirtis (Counsellor Troi) playing the stewardess in that advert.

To be completely honest with you, I wouldn't have noticed either had you not mentioned it. Can't believe around 40 years have passed by since these were regularly screened.
