Flicker Alley is a perfect home for this. They release some truly amazing stuff - Their four Cinerama Blu-Rays are among my most prized discs. I can't wait to see a list of what films will be included! |

Jerry Beck has an article on The Adventures of Sam Space, which will be on this disc.
cartoonresearch the-adventures-of-sam-space-1953 I did a quick flick through the anaglyph version, looks to have pretty good dimension to it, though I'll save it for a full viewing when I get the restored version on the disc. Looking forward to this and Boo Moon. Can't wait. Vintage stereo animation is of particular interest. Wish WB and Disney would release their 50s 3d short subjects too. |

The quality of the 3-D on SAM SPACE is excellent. That terrible circa 1980's anaglyphic conversion is a far cry from how it looks in true 3-D.
Meanwhile, 62 years ago... ![]() The restored prologue with Beany and Cecil will be on 3-D RARITIES, preserved from the original 35mm left/right negatives. That's the short they're watching in the iconic Life magazine images. |

The Beany and Cecil intro would also make a good extra for a Bwana Devil 3d disc if that ever happens. I haven't heard anything about it, so I take it Popeye's The Ace of Space will not be on the Rarities collection. Being the other 3d cartoon made by Famous Studios other than the Casper one, it'd be great to have it, although I understand it can be complex to negotiate the rights to these things as well as getting access to surviving prints. I was just reading about them earlier in the week. Seymour Kneitel blog golden-age-of-3d I'm curious about how they achieved the effect... did they use a multiplane, photographing on different layers of glass, or did they do something different like shifting the cels horizontally to photograph the second eye. It must've required careful planning. Too bad they never did sterescopic film back when they were using miniature set backgrounds on turntables. |

scanning through the film, I didn't notice any tight close-ups, like those seen in some of the modern Laika films to showcase things like subtle facial animation. The article on Cartoon Research appears to suggest that a specialised camera was developed for these films. Although maybe they just used oversized puppets. 3d stop motion is much more viable nowadays. The cameras aren't as big as small cars, so it isn't as much of a challenge to get the lenses close enough to minimize eye-strain. You can even do rudimentary 3d stop-motion on a Nintendo 3ds, although the cameras certainly aren't up to much. |

This is the 3-D rig that Ray Harryhausen used to shoot some test footage in 1953. This is the same configuration as the Warner Bros. All-Media camera and the Technicolor three-strip Dynoptic 3-D system.
I suspect this is a very similar design to what was used on SAM SPACE. In fact, it might be the same rig! ![]() ![]() |

I have Sam Space in the old Field Sequential 3D method. Very impressive 3D. Will look even better on Blu-ray 3D with no flickering.

If you want to take pictures of miniature models using a 3d camera, one thing you can do is mount it several feet away and then zoom right in. I tried this with my W3. If you take the pictures at normal distance, the overlap is far too wide, and you get almost nothing but eyestrain. By going back about 5 feet and zooming in, the 3d effect is subdued and much more easy on the eyes. Of course that limits the sort of camera angles you can use, but it might work for some shots. Reading that chapter it sounds like he wasn't terribly enthusiastic about the technology. Understandable, considering what a nightmare it would probably be to get miniature rear projection to work in 3d. I'm inclined to suspect he did the test mostly to talk his producer out of it. It shouldn't take a test to show that photo-blow-up backgrounds aren't going to work in 3d. I wonder has this footage ever turned up? It'd certainly be an interesting curio to show at a 3d festival or as a blu-ray extra. |
