Did the supplements from the Collector's Edition DVD get excluded from this BD's releases all over the world? From DVD Empire:

Quote:
"The Hundred Days" - Explore the world of Master and Commander as never before through this comprehensive 70-minute behind-the-scenes documentary made exclusively for this DVD release.

Multi-Angle Battle Scene Studies - Climb into the director's chair for a rare chance to compare multiple camera setups from two of the most explosive battle sequences in cinematic history.

Interactive Cannon Demonstration - Go on location as an audio effects engineer to analyze separate "cannon fire" microphone feeds from various distances on a shooting range.

Deleted Scenes - View over 20 minutes of deleted scenes rescued from the far side of the cutting room floor - including "Shipboard Life," "Weighing Anchor," "Galapagos," and much more.

HBO "First Look" - Get an in-depth view of the creative process through interviews with the director, cast and crew of Master and Commander as they prepare to bring Captain Aubrey's adventures to life.

"In the Wake of O'Brian" - Director Peter Weir explains the intense challenges and painstaking methods he employed to translate the literary works of Patrick O'Brian (author of the Aubrey/Maturin novels) to the big screen.

"Cinematic Phasmids" - Learn the moviemaking secrets that Master and Commander's effects team used to create the most realistic storm scene ever filmed and the historically accurate warships based on 200-year-old vessel designs.

Still Galleries - Browse through conceptual art drawings and period naval art, as well as fascinating technical drawings and construction blueprints used to construct the film's massive ships and sets.

The French is the only release in the world, which has them on the Blu-ray it self. But all those extras, will affect the image quality and audio.

Rumors go that the Italian release uses a different master. This release is from Miramax and all the extras are on a DVD.

I can't say anything about the picture quality of that Italian release. But I am not happy with the rest of the world. This movie needs a better transfer for sure.

This is why, even long after I shifted over to blu-ray, I got the 2-disc CE DVD of Master & Commander, THEN the blu-ray for the movie. Normally I wouldn't do this, but the difference in packaging is ridiculous and even getting the two did not cost me more than getting a typical new release BD.

Thanks. Regarding the PQ and AQ of the French release perhaps being affected by the presence of the supps: Do you feel like this is a significant concern despite the fact that the disc is a BD50?

This is what I finally decided to do recently as well, aided/abetted by not only the excellent price on the M & C / Cast Away (another pic Fox released bereft of significant supps from the DVD) double feature but also the nice Digibook packaging of the M & C CE DVD.

After six+ years, I don't think Fox is going to re-visit this title and I also don't think the flagging catalog market points to such a catalog title getting that kind of attractive (Digibook + map + booklet + extensive director-hosted featurettes) treatment again (if it's not released by Criterion, one of the other boutiques or Warner).

I got the BR for £5 in ASDA the other day and just chucked the DVDs from my UK CE in paper wallets inside the BR case.

Its annoying that we have to do these things as completeists :/

The US disc already uses 44GB of the 50GB in total.

I just put in my special features DVD. That DVD is already is 7,20GB in size. So a DVD-9.

Some compression may have been used. I only hearing bad stories about that the French disc. Same story goes up for Kingdom of Heaven. Also the French disc has all extras on board and again bad stories.

For now I am really curious if that Italian Blu-ray from Miramax really uses a different master/transfer.

Thanks. I wonder what the size would be of more recent and perhaps more efficient authorings/compressions of M & C and KOH would be. Looks like the French M & C dates back to 2009. There appear to be a few French KOHs according to the site's db: single-discers from '07 and '10 and a 2-disc (BD + DVD) from '11. Interestingly, de Lauzirika's "The Road To Redemption" docu is on the BD not the DVD according to the back cover artwork.
