Default Starting my own website related to Asian Blu-ray/DVD titles

Hi all,

Thought I'd start my own website that catalogues all the Asian films I own. Only three on there so far but will eventually get around to cataloging them all. I was thinking of enlisting some help from you guys if you have a title I don't (once the list is complete, obviously). If anyone is interested in adding info send me an email. I realise this site, blu-ray.com, itself has a database but I'm hoping mine will become a little more specific to Asian film and also be helpful for people who are always querying what region a disc is or what subs there are etc. etc. I would like to add photos of the genuine item itself as well. I find it a bit frustrating looking up stuff that only has a stock photo but no indication of what it is until I actually get it. I think a site that shows this will be helpful for others in this regard.

What do think of the setup so far, anyway? The site is here:

I really like the idea of it. I've had the same idea for the longest time but I'm just too lazy to start one. I help run http://www.filmsmash.com and http://www.filmsmasharchives.com and thought it would be great to have another website that focused on cataloging the different versions of movies. But since the majority of the work would be done by only me, just the thought of all that work was too much hehe. I may still attempt it some day tho.

In terms of the look of your site...I think it is nice IF you are only displaying info for one movie and one version. But considering one movie can have X amount of versions of dvds/vcds/vhs/laserdiscs, your current format isn't practical in my opinion.

For this kind of catalog site something simple would be best. Something along the lines of hkmdb.com in terms of structure. Maybe even add an index, like how I have on my filmsmasharchives.com site (tho index can come later after everything else is set up).

Getting help from others to populate the catalog is a great idea. However, from the looks of the site, it doesn't look very user friendly on the back end. Something like wordpress where you can set up users as contributors and they can add easily would best I think. If you are just using html/java, then that means you'd have to grant access to the cpanel of your hosting site and navigate to the files directly. Where as something like wordpress, users can log in on the wordpress site and post from there without all that backend stuff.

thanks for the reply! I agree with your points. I plan to add a search bar but so far haven't got it working. I might have to move to another provider if I cannot get this to work as the current one doesn't allow any access to the 'backend' of the site. I think this will help with how the site is used. Also, with the problem of discs from different regions, I might just add, instead of the 'more info' button, something like 'Korean Version' or 'US Version' or 'US DVD', 'Korean Blu-ray' or or something like that, then you can just click on different versions.

In terms of adding a login for people to add their own info, I'm not too keen on the idea. In the long run, you are right, that would be a hell of a lot easier. But I'm more intent on the site having 100% verified info, not just people looking up titles on the net and adding third hand info or even leaving out stuff they cannot verify. This would defeat the purpose of the site, I think.

I know this will take a bit of people's time to check these things and take quality, professional photos for the items, but I only need about three or four people preferably from people with US versions, I think, to supplement what I can collect with my budget, which is probably about 2 or 3 blu-rays a month.

On another point, I'd like the site to help people weed out the bootlegs available on ebay. Bootlegs are probably easy to spot, but if you have a site that list all of the info about the legit discs it might, possibly, help people identify what specific version they want to get.

'asian' isn't specific. it's a continent, not a country.

Its a good idea, like the look of the site. But be warned it takes a lot of work as i found out running my two sites, http://jackiechandvds.co.uk and http://bruceleedvds.co.uk
It takes a lot of time trying to gather information on the different versions of the films available and sometimes the information given can be wrong. Having just Blu ray narrows it down a bit. Good luck with it.

i live in england. it's part of europe. i'd hate to think of myself as from a continent before i'm from a country.

There's still hardly any info on their site, though. Most of the info comes from the yesasia store from the ones I've clicked on.

ok, so here is what the standard template will look like:

http://www.cliqueasia.com/#!the-four-2/ctyt

Enough info? Anything I need to add? I'll add the scores and synopsis once I've watched it as I only got it yesterday. Then it should look complete.

ok, will add these.

Also, does anyone know how to get the correct Display Aspect Ratio if it is not on the blurry cover? I've tried Mediainfo but that only gives me 16:9 every time, doesn't include the black bars.
