Default HD DUD completely missed the mark!

Sorry if this is a repeat. I spent a couple days away from the site and it is amazing what you miss out on!! But take a look at this!!!

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/sh...op_90,000/1150

HDDUD completly messed up when they said they sold 190k players!!! they only sold 90k! They were off by 100k!!

Didnt they say they sold over 100,000 in a day? I think they messed up! just a little!

and, that 90k number may be misreported. there is speculation that is trying to be confirmed that the tally was actually closer to 70k over the whole weekend with a total supply available of 90k.

I think you're confusing the Transformers sales numbers (where they claimed to have sold 100k copies or so in a day) with the player sales numbers.

Are you sure you're not thinking of WB reporting 190,000 Transformers sold?

Have to give them some props though... 90k units sold in 1 weekend is HUGE! This basically proves price is a factor, but still might not be the ultimate factor. My only question is, how many of those people who bought those HD DVD players actually owns an HDTV?

ok....90k standalones sold...but how many of them were bought by people to already owns a HD DVD player? disc sales is still the key factor in winning this format war. toshiba sold ALL these players at a BIG lost. and if they keep this up....theyre gonna file bankruptcy before this war is over.

Thats true. 90k standalones is a very large number. My hat is off to them, it truly is. That was one hell of a strategy to get them in everyone's home.

The only problem I see is that they will not sell the software to help the format. They have alot of players in alot of households now, but so does Blu-Ray. All of the PS3s + Standalones = many many players.

My real question is, how many of these were Xmas gifts?? Do you think that we will see a HUGE spike in sales after Q4?

I think the real question is how many of those people already own an HD DVD player or a HD DVD add-on?!

Every move HD-DuD make are for the short haul, like the cheap player and the 1 year bribe to Paramount. We, one the other hand, are looking into the future.

They may win a battle here and there, but we WILL win the war!

But at what cost? What cost to the consumer will this war take?

Unless we win MOST of these battles, we are going to end up in a stalemate and HDM will die off like lazerdisc... Then everyone who invested into this new medium will be SOL.

Battles are good because they are dropping prices and making content readily available but too many battles and CE companies will just give up!

2 cents...

this is an ignorant answer (sorry), but don't know and don't care. I am too busy setting up my 2nd PS3

What I'm concerned with is that when are stand alone players going to catch up with the PS3, because it makes no sense to me that a game console is "much" more superior at a job that is stand alone player's ONLY responsibility...but that is a whole other discussion on another thread...

Sorry

70k would make more sense.

Also, did anyone else see that mainstream publications like Entertainment Weekly were still reporting the inaccurate figure for Transformers HD-DVD at 190k (when they were somewhere between 89k and 115k)? And this well after the 190k claim had been corrected in the press. Grrrrrr.

The HDDVD player buyers are probably like this:

Quote:
"WOW, we got a super Deal with those cheap HD VDHS... whatever things! Letīs buy the Pirates movie!"

I think it's more 90,000 people who haven't been educated about this format war. They're not stupid (ok, well...some people definitely are), they just saw cheap price for a high definition player not knowing there's a far better format with much better movie choice and higher picture and audio quality.

But Blu-ray manufacturers are partly to blame for not releasing players at $299 yet. Get it moving!
