Default Police Academy remake

Zabielski to direct 'Police Academy' remake

Quote:
Longtime "Tosh.0" helmer Scott Zabielski will make his feature directorial debut with New Line's remake of "Police Academy."
Zabielski beat out several more experienced helmers for the coveted comedy gig, which the director is well suited for, having gone through actual police academy training as a reserve officer in West Hollywood.

David Diamond and David Weissman wrote the script, while original "Police Academy" producer Paul Maslansky will return to produce the remake. New Line is expected to start production this year, though they'll have to find a cast first.

The original 1984 "Police Academy" opened atop the box office where it stayed for three weeks before dropping to the second slot. However, it regained the top spot during its fifth and sixth weekends and proved to have legs throughout the summer, grossing more than $81 million domestically despite never playing on more than 1,587 screens.

Zabielski started his career as an editor on "Beauty and the Geek" and "Talkshow with Spike Feresten." He's repped by UTA and Underground Films and Management.

My first thought when I saw this thread was "WHY?!!!!"

After reading the article, and seeing that the guy has actual police academy experience, I don't know what to think. Not even sure if it matters for slapstick comedy. Do they plan on making a serious "PA" movie? I don't get it. So I'll still ask, "why?!!"

Really? Well they can make it if they want to but I won't be one of those seeing it. I last saw the first movie I think back in 1985 or maybe 1986 and I never bother to check out the other dozen sequels they made

Nope - It had its funny moments but thats it. Totally forgettable. The only lasting thing from that film is the guywho can make all those sound effects with his voice/mouth....freegin amazing....

While I understand the general disdain for remakes as a whole, I wonder if comedy is going to be a bit different. Not only is comedy subjective, but it also lives and breathes in it's time. Police Academy came out in 1984 - nearly 30 years of humor, timing and context have gone between then and now.

Would it be better to come up with something brand new? Sure, but it wouldn't hurt for this concept to have a fresh coat of paint. The original Police Academy films were effectively Keystone Cops with a new coat of paint.

Really only the ones with Guttenberg are any good. I never thought I would ever say that in my life, but I just did. Here is the thing about making a remake over a sequel. Bubba Smith (Hightower), David Graff (Tackleberry), and the dude that played house are all dead. Also Art Moreno (Mauser) is confined to a wheel chair. So a sequel will have half the original cast that are playing cops in their 50s or 60s. A remake or better yet a reboot is the only way to go. The new Police Academy cannot be worse than part 7 in Russia. No film can be that bad unless Uwe Boll does it.

As for the knock on Rogen and Rudd, Rudd is awesome actually and yes Rogen plays the same guy and has been over exposed.

Thats not a bad point but you could apply that towards any type of movie. For example, think of a movie with cold war themes - like the film 2010. Its not a bad film but the whole russian/USA tension thing is completely lost on modern era moviegoers. Or, something like Gone with the Wind with heavy slavery overtones.

Context and timing are huge and I suspect this is the very reason why I have a hard time with many older movies - I just dont "get" what they are going through or have trouble relating.

Good Post.

When last we reported on the planned reboot of New Line Cinema’s Police Academy franchise, Scott Zabielski was attached to direct. He’s no longer in the picture, but Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele are now signed on to produce the film. The seven-film franchise featured a group of quirky and hilariously unexceptional police recruits tasked with bringing law and order to city streets. There’s no word just yet as to whether or not they would also star, though their style of humor on the sketch comedy show Key & Peele certainly makes them well-suited. Hit the jump for more.

THR reports that Key and Peele are on board to produce the Police Academy reboot, which has been in the works for some years now. Paul Maslansky, who produced the original 1984 film starring Steve Guttenberg, is also back to produce the reboot. Here’s what Maslansky had to say about the project:

“It’s going to be very worthwhile to the people who remember it and to those who saw it on TV. It’s going to be a new class. We hope to discover new talent and season it with great comedians. It’ll be anything but another movie with a numeral next to it. And we’ll most probably retain the wonderful musical theme.”

Key and Peele will return for a fourth season of Key & Peele on Comedy Central, and will appear in four episodes of the FX series Fargo as FBI members.
