Default The Motorcycle Diaries

Is the only release of this movie the UK version? There's 3 reviews of it and I guess the transfer is really bad. This is one of my favorite movies and would love to have it on blu-ray. Does anyone have it or have seen the blu-ray, and if so, what are your thoughts?

I don't own this myself, but some mates on a spanish blu ray forum hace that the image of this title is quite decent, but very grainy, true to the original source. Don't expect Pixar quality here because it was never meant to be. Besides, the price is quite cheap.

Well the version I saw was the "hd" version on Netflix and it didn't look too bad, i'm sure the blu-ray can't look any worse than that, can it? lol

Default Che Guevara

Just want to make sure anyone who buys this knows it is about the young Che Guevara who was a racist, murderous marxist.

Quote from The Motorcycle Diaries (the book):

"The black is indolent and a dreamer; spending his meager wage on frivolity or drink; the European has a tradition of work and saving, which has pursued him as far as this corner of America and drives him to advance himself, even independently of his own individual aspirations."

Che Guevara: From Murderous Thug To T-Shirt Icon
By Ed Driscoll · July 31, 2007

More from the memory hole, as Michael Chapman of CNSNews.com interviews Humberto Fontova, author of Exposing the Real Che Guevara and the Useful Idiots Who Idolize Him:

Cybercast News Service: What do you consider to be some of Guevara's greatest crimes or offenses that people today should know about?

Humberto Fontova: He was the chief executioner. He performed for the Cuban revolution what Heinrich Himmler performed for the Nazis. Everything Che Guevara did was directed by Fidel Castro. Early on, when they were in the mountains, Castro realized that Che seemed to relish executing little farm boys. There were executions carried out, carried out in the mountains, of so-called informers. I interviewed many people who witnessed those executions. There was no due process.

Che Guevara wrote a letter to his father in 1957 and to his abandoned wife. In the letter to her, he wrote, "I'm here in Cuba's hills, alive and thirsting for blood." Then, to his father, "I really like killing." The man was a clinical sadist, whereas Fidel Castro you could describe as a psychopath in that the murders did not affect him one way or the other. It was a means to an end - the consolidation of his one-man rule. Che has a famous quote, where he wrote, a revolutionary has to become "a cold killing machine." The thing was, Che Guevara was anything but cold. He was a warm killing machine. He relished the slaughter.

And Hollywood can't stop making movies idolizing him, which helps to place this recent essay by Jonah Goldberg into context.

If you are aware of what Che was & want to buy the movie, fine. I just want those who think it is some innocent journey of self discovery to be aware of what the main character really was in real life.

I'm not going to support or decry Che's actions or beliefs in any way. But, to be fair, you're showing one side of the story. You're quoting The Motorcycle Diaries without providing any context. Those were the words of a young man who had only just encountered blacks for the first time, while in Venezuela. He later refuted his own statements, and spoke highly of blacks on numerous occasions. Many people have formed opinions of others that were probably wrong based on an early judgement. Those opinions can change.

You don't have to agree with or support Che's motivations, actions, or beliefs. However, you should at look at the information you are providing in the correct context. Maybe also provide some quotes from sources that are more middle grounded, and not so blatantly anti-Che.

Back on topic, I'm glad to see this film is getting a Blu-ray release. No matter who the films subject matter is, it's a fantastic piece of cinema. I ill be picking this one up for sure. Hopefully, it has a halfway's descent transfer.

Between your comments & mine I think people unfamiliar with Che will be informed & can research the topic themselves.

You are the kind of person that believes everything that reads out there, right ? I can't belive things you posted here. I highly doubt that those are real Che's quotes, and as an Argentine myself, I really do know what I'm talking about. Believe me one thing, most people in the world laughs really hard when we read the LIES most of American people is used ( and forced in some kind ) to read. And this one is one of these.

It's out in Finland too. But the Finnish version does not have English subtitles and no info of region coding.

Can be ordered from here.

Thumbs down Horrible Video Quality on CDN Version

I recently received the CDN Region A release of this BD (released by Alliance on 23 Aug '11) and it is very likely that it's the same shoddy transfer as the UK disc. The PQ was terrible throughout; this disc has the worst Blu-ray video quality of any title in my collection to date... At times I thought I was watching an old, worn VHS tape.

Footnote: My video score would be 0.5/5, to give it a score of 1 would be an insult to the engineers who created the Blu-ray format.

I'm sorry to bring this back to life after three years but why is this movie still not available in the USA on Blu ray? Putting politics aside, this is a fantastic movie that I would love to own. Crazy that it's not out already.

I agree wholeheartedly, which is why I still have an HDDVD player, so I can watch it every so often. I wish bluray.com would review the British version to see if the video is really as bad as they say, to better yet, the Alliance version from Canada.

They're listing it at $57.99 which is a bit rich for me. How was the picture quality?
