France LES MISERABLES (Raymond Bernard, 1934)

I have the Criterion Eclipse set of Bernard's WOODEN CROSSES (also announced in France on blu!) and LES MIS and am excited for this announcement. I've imported from France before but not sure if Pathe ever includes English subtitles. Anyone know?

The only Pathe release that I know has English subtitles is 'Un Bonheur N'Arrive Jamais Seul'. Not sure if there are any others.

I really wish Pathe and other French companies would go the Gaumont route and include English subtitles on most releases. I'm speculating here, but it seems to me to have been a strategy that has worked for Gaumont with increased sales of their releases, and increased international licensing to the UK and US.

Couldn't agree more RDA. You would think they would want to promote French cinema as much as they can. It may be a bit lazy of us not to have the level of French required but I can only understand spoken French if it is spoken slowly and would prefer subtitles.

There is a wonderful line in the (English-spoken) Oscar-winning MGM musical film, GIGI, in which our Parisian heroine is visiting her aunt for after-school "etiquette" lessons. Aunt Alicia asks Gigi about what she studied in school that day. Gigi replies, "History, math, English..." Aunt Alicia's wry remark: "English. Well, I suppose we must. They absolutely refuse to learn French."

Thank you so much Geoffrey! I will be importing this day one. Are you pleased with the A/V quality? I hope Pathe includes English subtitles on their Bunuel release which is due out the same day.

It depends on the font size, but I agree that when the font size is small, it can be annoying.

Geoffrey Firmin - Do you know if any of the other Pathe Classics have English subtitles too?

Review at dvdclassik. Región-free, English & French SDH subtitles for the main movie. 10 minutes longer tan the Eclipse DVD, 4 hours 49 minutes total.

Thanks for the information - anything on the other Pathe titles to be released at the same time? I looked them up on fnac.fr and they all (except LA DOLCE VITA) show English subs, but no indication of the Region Code.

Mr. Shaky

You need to press, very gently, the tiny clips on both sides of the tray.

Do NOT try to press the plastic holder in the middle. If you do, you will likely break it.
