Default What's up with Best Buy's ad?

I was just looking through the Best Buy ad and what the hell there is 1 and 1/2 pages of HD DVD moves and only one little conner of Blu-Ray movies. The HD-DVD pages have players for sale and talk about the get 7 free HD-DVD movies and all they show for Blu-ray is the higher priced movies then what HD-DVD is offering. What the heck?

If by a little corner you mean 1/2 a page than you're right. How can you say HD DVD has 1 1/2 pages. 1/2 of one page is taken up by 3 LCDs on the supposed HD DVD page.

Shrek the third is the big movie release of the week. I know CE3K is also coming out, but the big new release which all retailers are going to push is Shrek, and what format is that on now?

Addition: A few page laters in the box for the Ocean's movies it has the blu-ray version of 13 above the HD DVD version, and it is also $5 cheaper. That's nice, as HD DVD tries to trumpet cheaper players, but that is negated by having to spend $5 more on movies. Also, the stacked picture of the trilogy has the blu-ray version on top of the HD DVD version. That should assuage some of your concerns.

The HD add is a little overwhelming, The page is in HD DVD colors and Blu-Ray has 1/2 page. It almost makes me feel that if an average person who doesn't know about either format was to look at this, you would definitely think that HD is the powerhouse. Again, if you don't know, and by the way, the average household consumer doesn't.

They do this week in and week out. When POTC3 comes out they'll push BD, and people will be on here praising it. It doesn't say anything about their stance. The last time I went to a BBuy about 2/3 of their hi-def DVDs were BDs, so that's who their pushing.

Not really, there were plenty of $34.99 titles on the HD DVD side, many more than were on the BD side, of course, it would have been more telling if they would have had the WB counterparts along with the HD DVD ones showing that they are only $29.99 as opposed to $34.99 for Ocean's Thirteen, license to Wed, We are Marshall, The Reaping, TMNT, 300, The Departed. If they would have shown those, it would be apparent that the BDs were less expensive.

Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they charge for ad space? Even in their own fliers, companies have to be paying something for a retailer to be pushing their product line. I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up yet...

The two interesting things I noticed are

a) no really good deals on HD-DVD media this week to help Shrek
b) typically you will see advertisements for the new Movie on both formats on a lot of the TV's to boost the adverstising. This time (at least in the Circuit City / Best Buy ads) it just says Shrek 3 is available on DVD and no mention of HD-DVD

I don't think it really matters.

Companies pay for ad placement just like they pay for shelf placement

What's in the ad is no indication of loyalties

With Shrek 3 coming out, it makes sense that HD-DVD would pay be a big ad placement.

last week was heavy blu, this week is hd heavy. what i think is funny is about half of the hd dvds displayed are available on blu ray too. unfortunately J6P doesn't know that.

what annoyed me was that Close encounters only had a couple little words next to it that said "on blu ray". most of the ads today had scattered blu rays instead of a singular ad space.

It flip flops every week so no worries...plus the BB's in our area are mostly pushing Blu anyway.

This link:

http://www.blackfridayads.com/stores/2

shows the following for Best Buy:

Playstation 3 40GB w/ NBA 08 Game & Open Season Blu-Ray $399.99
Samsung BP-D1400 Blu-Ray Player w/ 7 Free Blu-Ray Movies $399.99
Sony BD-PS300 Blu-Ray Player w/ Free $100 GC & 6 Blu-Ray Movies $499.99
Toshiba HD-A3 HD-DVD Player with 7 HD-DVD Movies $199.99

From that, it looks like the S300 won't have an MSRP drop before Thanksgiving.

Also, looks like all those deals are good for the whole sale (not just the morning).

BTW: I think Circuit City's deal on the PS3 looks a little better, with a free controller and 3 free Blu-ray movies for $399.99 (not clear if people get to choose their movies though). And the Samsung BD-P1400 is $377.99 (but doesn't look like it comes with any movies instantly). I don't see any Circuit City deals for Toshiba players.

the Futureshop(canada BB owned) flyers seem to always push HDDVD more especially there holiday flyer season, hddvd players/movies get more space, been noticing that fer awhile, but the Bestbuy ads seem pretty fair/neutral/ more blu favourable then futureshop

maybe since Bestbuy uses Blue as their colour scheme and Futureshop uses Red they made them each support their respective colours
