Default Anyone order Blu-rays from Germany?

I've noticed that there are quite a lot of sci-fi/horror movies that have only been released on Blu-ray in Germany:

The Abandoned
Absentia
Against The Dark
Airborne
American Warships
Apartment 1303
Arachnoquake
Atlantic Rim
Behemoth
Bloodrayne
Bloodrayne 2: Deliverance
Bloodrayne: The Third Reich
Bong of the Dead
Buried Alive
The Burrowers
Creature
Dance of the Dead
Dead Set
Fido
Forget Me Not
From Within
Highlander: The Source
Hunter Prey
Hyenas
Isolation
The Last Winter
Nine Miles Down
The Nun
100 Feet
Open Graves
Piranhaconda
Sand Sharks
The Shadow Within
Shallow Ground
Society
Under The Mountain
Virus

Does anyone import them from Germany or are you satisfied with the DVD versions?

Nine Miles Down / Knife Edge Double Feature

Open Graves / 100 Feet Double Feature.

I have both of these, but have not confirmed the specs.

Not sure about some of the releases above but I've always tread carefully with German releases. In the cult/horror space there are a few companies notoriously release poor quality or compromised (cut) releases

http://www.ofdb.de is a great source to find out if a title is cut in Germany. I use it all the time.

Here's the webpage for The Abandoned blu-ray. Now how do I find out whether or not it's been cut?

Can you give an example of a cut German release?

I have ordered twice from Amazon.de (Polanski's "Oliver Twist" and Clayton's "The Innocents"). Both discs are excellent in all respects!

I've bought a number of German discs and the quality varies considerably from good to dvd standard PQ.

I've found the experience a tad hit and miss.

As for delivery & packaging - I only buy from amazon.de - it's quick & all have arrived in perfect condition

I have quite a few, none of the above listed ones though. Like others have said, quality can vary so do your research first. This site and bluray-disc.de are helpful resources.

I have used amazonde, amazon.it and amazon.es to order german discs, as well as http://www.grooves-inc.com. Have had no issues with ordering from either.

I didn't know there were blu-ray discs with a standard definition level of quality. Can you tell me which ones? Wouldn't it be illegal to sell a standard definition movie as a blu-ray?

Illegal? No.

There are many, many blu-rays which are labeled as near standard definition by consumers.

Listing all of them would be a giant task and doesn't exactly fit in with the original point of the thread does it?

The whole thread is kind of meaningless in terms of Australian Blu-Rays really..

This is the first time I've heard of Blu-rays with SD quality. Can you at least point me to a thread or a blog that discusses this issue?

The meaning of this thread is to discuss whether it's worth it to import a high definition movie from another country, or whether the SD versions that are available in Australia are good enough.

You're asking about a specific list of films.

If you wanting the specs of those films, it's best to ask in the German subforum.

Some examples: The qatsi titles are very poor quality and I bought these long before the the Arrow release - very disappointing.

Lola rennt aka Run Lola Run on the other hand has a good PQ and superior quality sound to the UK release.
The Russia House is a good quality disc. Repulsion, Assault on Precinct 13 & M are lavishly packaged and come highly recommended.

Otherwise, look for the little scissor icon before the title. If it has a scissor, then it's cut.

If I buy a German edition blu-ray, will the text in the movie (movie title, credits) be in English or German?

That depends on the title. Some are like you describe, others are English. This also happens with French Blu-Rays (Underworld 2 as an example)
You will have to do some research for each title before buying.

Mixed bag. Be careful of foreign movies also. Don't assume English subs, (I stupidly bought Ong bak trilogy German release without checking this)

Good starting point for research, the below megathread lists all known & contributed foreign releases not available as US release or if better quality/ more features.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=179724

Apartment 1303 3d/2d Aus release $16 on eBay.

My fave German only release is the black comedy, 'Very Bad Things'. Another great German only release is Rules of Engagement.

Have also read plenty of bad comments about Germany's exclusive post conversion 3d releases.

How's hudson hawk compare to the USA double feature (w/Hollywood Homicide)? It looks horrible in the double feature.
