Default The Peacemaker (1997)- 9/21/10

The Peacemaker is a classic movie that has never looked or sounded this good before

This Blu-ray uses only 33.3GB of space on a dual layer Blu-ray. The bit rate could have been higher to offer a better picture quality and the movie might not have received an 8K or 4K high quality scan from the film negative (Not sure if 4K or 2K was used as the master scan before downconverting it to 1080P). On the positive side this is the best version of the Peacemaker in terms of picture and sound quality that is available to the consumer. When compared to the 1080I MPEG-2 D-VHS version the 1080P AVC Blu-ray version has a higher bit rate and looks better than the 1080I D-VHS version. Depth and resolution were excellent and the DTS-HD Master audio soundtrack was a nice bonus.

This is an excellent realistic fictional movie for those that like movies about the good guys fighting the evil terrorist in the world. Movie shows the US Military and US Government as the good guys fighting the terrorist. Those that have patriotic conservative values should enjoy the movie. The Peacemaker was made in 1997 and is a classic movie. At least there are a few SD bonus features on the disc with a HD Peacemaker movie trailer. No commentary track. I hope a future release of the movie would include a commentary track. It would be interesting to have someone make a commentary track for this action packed movie.

There are two Easter eggs for the Peacemaker on Blu-ray.

The first hidden bonus interview in SD quality lasts 1 minute and 10 seconds. Go into settings from the disc main menu. Then move to subtitles none. Once you reach subtitles none press the right button and then a little yellow X will appear. Hit enter and the short George Clooney interview will occur.

The second bonus interview is 40 seconds. Go to Extras from main menu, then move down to theatrical trailer. Once at the theatrical trailer section click the right button on the remote to see a little gray symbol appear. Hit enter and the short director interview will occur.

Ok, I really liked this movie, but this almost makes me NOT want to get it:

"Conservative values"?? Seriously?? why do personal politics have to play into this at all? I enjoyed it, and I'm patriotic, but consider myself a Conservative? Dear God, no. If buying this movie meant I am, I'd have to pass on it.

As for the disc, sounds like they dropped an easter egg from the dvd. The dvd had Clooney, Leder, and Kidman interviews.

I'm not really understanding the "classic movie" reference. Is anyone else confused?

There are some modern action movies that show Americans fighting terrorism with a more of a liberal viewpoint since they show terrorists having special rights. For example the Blu-ray movie the Unthinkable shows both a radical left and radical right point of view on how to deal with terrorist (http://www.dvdempire.com/Exec/v4_item.asp?item_id=1528552 ). There have been many Hollywood movies also that have shown Americans as the bad guys for the things they do during war.

The Peacemaker movie is a patriotic movie and both liberals and conservatives most likely would enjoy it. I know there are some people on the left that may not like people’s civil rights being temporally suspended toward the end of the Peacemaker movie in the interest of national security. Both liberals and conservatives most of the time love the United States and are willing to defend it. Both the left and right have different viewpoints on how to go about defending the United States, in my opinion I felt the 13 year old Peacemaker movie appeared to be more conservative compared to modern movies about war and terrorism. Some may disagree with my opinion.

There are so many movies that talk about political and religious issues. As a freedom of speech issue a reviewer should be able to mention briefly the politics or religion of a movie. The only reason I started the thread was to report about the Easter egg issue. I decided to mention briefly the movie in general and what I felt appeared to be the politics. Most likely the writer and director of the movie would say that it is not a political movie but an action packed patriotic movie.

Technically anyone can call any movie a classic. People that do not like movies about terrorism might not think this movie is a classic. There are classic horror movies, classic love stories, etc. There are many movies people call classics that I do not like to watch since I think they are boring. This Blu-ray Peacemaker movie is a good movie to at least rent for its action packed entertainment.

You are right - I just never heard of this movie refered to as a classic...I would say a 90s film like Point Break is a classic, while others may disagree, but no one can disagree that they have never heard of Point Break being referred as a classic. It's just the first time I heard that The Peacemaker reffered as a classic. That's fine with me - I'm glad some one loves this film. It was after all the first film that my wife and I saw together when we were dating, so The Peacemaker has some sort of connection to me!

I think Into The Blue may become my next classic film, speaking of movies that aren't typically going to be called classics.

Oh yeah, and I've heard of Old School be referred to as a classic which just boggles my mind.

Peacemaker is a favorite of mine but I won't buy the BD because of the average PQ. I usually buy BDs with excellent PQ. Otherwise, I'll just rent them at Netflix.

Peacemaker is an underated movie. After the stink fest of Batman and Robin, it was Clooney's first legit hit. There was some good action to it. Hope to pick it up in a Black Friday sale

For those who own this on blu, is the AQ and PQ really that bad as the review here suggests? I enjoyed this movie and would love to add it to my collection.

I am actually very pleased this movie is getting attention and praise, after stumbling on it on TV years ago and renting it soon after I figured I loved it and will wait for the Blu. I just need a good price now!
