USA The Morning After (1986) (Shout! Factory)

Shout! Factory will be releasing the 1986 mystery/thriller The Morning After, directed by Sidney Lumet, and starring Jane Fonda and Jeff Bridges, on May 30th.

Quote:
Bonus Features for Blu-ray
  • NEW 2023 2K Scan Of The Interpositive
  • Audio: English DTS-HD Master Audio Mono
  • Audio Commentary With Director Sidney Lumet
  • NEW “Serious Bender: Remembering The Morning After” – An interview With Associate Producer/Assistant Director Wolfgang Glattes
  • NEW “A Night to Remember: Composing The Morning After” – An Interview With Composer Paul Chihara
Quote:
Failed actress Alex Sternbergen (Jane Fonda) wakes up hungover one morning in an apartment she does not recognize, unable to remember the previous evening -- and with a dead body in bed next to her. As she tries to piece together the events of the night, Alex cannot totally rely on friends or her estranged husband, Joaquin (Raul Julia), for assistance. Only a single ally, loner ex-policeman Turner Kendall (Jeff Bridges), can help her escape her predicament and find the true killer.

Huh. I always figured this would come from Criterion. Color me surprised. Terrific news nonetheless.

I saw this a very long time ago, but I do remember liking it even though I don't remember much else. It also has Raul Julia who is one of my favorites, so will easily revisit this.

As big of a surprise this release is (a very nice surprise) an even bigger surprise to me would be if Shout released Lumet's other 1986 film, Power. Like Morning After it is a second tier Lumet film but it also has a great cast (Richard Gere, Gene Hackman, Julie Christie). I hold no hopes of WAC ever releasing this on blu ray but would love to get rid of my dvd with its mediocre PQ. Another 80s Lumet dvd I would love to upgrade but will never see on BD: Just Tell Me What You Want.

For the curious, 'Power' is currently streaming on Tubi. To me it is a spiritual sequel to 'Network'. Great cast but hardly the classic that 'Network' is.

I watched The Morning After and Jagged Edge in the video days in the late 80's and remember liking the latter better. If you had to choose between the two, which would you all prefer?

How very dare you!

Second-tier Sidney Lumet films are not a "thing".

Either it's a Sidney Lumet film or it's not.

Very glad about this. The Morning After has been on my Blu-ray film titles wishlist for some time. Had thought this would be coming from the WAC, but no complaints with it being released by Shout. Fingers crossed for a new restoration/master, but not expecting many extras (but I hope there are one or two audio and video interview extras if there are some).

I watched 8 Million Ways to Die a few weeks ago and enjoyed it. And had watched 52 Pick Up a few weeks prior to that and thought it was great. And I also really like this film.

1986 had some really great LA-based thrillers.

I love the Wiz!

Now Bye Bye Braverman, Lumet doing comedy, is something else entirely . . .

A Stranger Among Us?

(And I say this as someone who adores Melanie Griffith.)
