totally! the first two seasons look worse than the VHS versions! Season 3 on dont look as bad. Now since the first four seasons were full fream '4:3' does that mean that Fox will have to convert them to 16:9 to take up the HDTV monitor screen size?

while they are at it, maybe they could release 24 on blu-ray too.

Well, odds are they will prepare the series for the Blu-Ray format as soon X-Files 2 is greenlighted.

Well things framed for 4:3 TVs they can be pillarboxed to 1080 x 1440 1.33

Or since TV productions use a TV Safe action area of 10% they could try do a 1080 x 1600 version of nearly 1.50 ...

I agree with the last two posts; I have the slim sets of the x-files, they do not look bad, but definately not great. I would get all 9 seasons on Blu-ray is the transfer came out well.

These were all done in SD, right? Slim chance of them coming out on Blu-ray if so.

I agree - I don't think we'll be seeing many shows that were done in SD coming out in HD anytime soon.

Now that I've said that, though, aren't the orignal Star Treks coming out on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray at some point?

Presumably you mean the original editing / mastering? They were filmed on 35mm, so should look stunning if remastered from the original negs. If we assume the cost of remastering is a fixed cost per minute of footage, then on that basis a season would cost approx 8 times as much to remaster as a movie. But of course it will also depend how much special effects work needs to be redone.

Personally, though I enjoyed The X-Files and own the whole lot on DVD, I can't see myself ever rewatching my DVDs, let alone upgrading them all to Blu-ray. If I'd never bought and watched all the DVDs I'd see it differently and would probably find the idea of watching them all on Blu-ray quite appealing.

I am un-sure about this one. I own all the seasons on DVD but I can't see them remastering the whole 9 seasons. It's a shame, they would look fantastic but, can I see myself shelling out another £200-£300 + for them in Hi Def, not really.

They did such a poor job on the DVD's I can't see them getting something sorted for Blu Ray. I think a lot of TV series' go against the HD era of things... even 24. It's all about the script and characterisation, same go's for Lost and Prison Break!

I just cant wait for Lost on blu-ray! I really think they will come out with Blu-ray versions of the X-Files, maybe not the last couple seasons because they weren't as popular but the first three or four seasons because the SD transfers were horrible. I think when they announce X-Files 2 they will come out with some of the seasons on Blu-ray to hype it up.

Interesting. I always just assumed all TV shows were shot in Video. I know there are some exceptions, but I had no idea the X-Files was one of them.

Well, most TV series were shot on 35mm but many masters aren't in high definition. So if they were to re-master the TV series in High-Definition, that may mean they'll have to re-do the master by scanning all the film negatives and re-editing them all over again. New special effects and all that.

That's what they did with Star Trek TOS.

I know the first 5 season of X-Files and they look decent. I have also seen X-Files on TNT-HD. It's bad...not horrid...but pretty bad!

TNT-HD stretches everything to 16:9, which bugs the crap out of me.

Fox announces Blu-ray titles
Author: Geoff Richards
Published: 4th August 2005
Some of the Fox films to be available on Blu-ray. Will the upgrade to HD be worth the replacement cost?
Twentieth Century Fox have pledged support for the Blu-Ray format, one of two High Definition replacements for existing DVD Video. The news will be warmly received by group of hardware manufacturers who formed the standard, who include such industry heavyweights as Sony, Toshiba, Dell, Philips Electronics, Samsung Electronics and Matsushita Electric, maker of Panasonic products.

To receive support from a major studio like Fox is especially good for Sony, who's PlayStation 3 console also uses the format, which can store 25GB on a single layer and 50GB on dual-layer discs. Blu-ray's rival, HD DVD, can hold a maximum of 30GB on a dual-layered disc; conventional DVDs have a maximum dual-layered capacity of 9GB.

Fox have an expansive back-catalogue of feature films and television series to draw from, encompassing a wide range of genres and subject matter. The press release specifically listed the following titles as examples:

Feature Films
Alien I-IV

Die Hard Trilogy

X-Men I & II

I, Robot

There's Something About Mary

Moulin Rouge

Sound of Music

Of course, buying the boxset of your favourite TV shows is increasingly popular these days, and Fox make some of the most popular shows around. The following series will be released for Blu-ray:

The Simpsons

Family Guy

24

The X-Files

M*A*S*H

That news story isn't far off two years old, so who knows when these things will actually appear. I can't wait for the Alien set on Blu-ray, though, I've already bought the box set twice on dvd to get the different versions of the movies and will happily buy the whole lot again.
