Monsters University French BD

I ordered and received the Monsters University Blu-ray from Cineplex and I notice that it has French packaging. Well, it's bilingual, as it should be, but rather than English coming first and then French, it's French coming before the English. Which makes me wonder...

Could anyone with this Blu-ray please tell me if the Pixar animators changed any English printing within the movie to French, i.e., words printed on signs, papers, etc.? It'd be easy enough for them to do so, I would imagine, and it's possible they do this for non-English speaking regions. I don't want to open up the packaging to find out, cos then I may not be able to return it.

What UPC?

The English version is 786936-831757


The Bilingual French Version is 786936-831764


It appears Blu-ray.com has both of them as listed as bilingual, but the English version is the same UPC as the US version.

Cineplex carries both, you probably just ordered the French without knowing.

As far as the Fims being different, I don't believe so... It wouldn't surprise me if they were identical discs.

Well, "should be" because it's mandatory (I believe) for all packaging in Canada to be bilingual.

I don't see a UPC for the movie on my order page, but the cover is identical to the French cover you show.

Canada has two official languages--English and French. The Consumer Packaging and Labeling Act requires that a prepackaged product must have a label in both official languages. The one exemption from this rule is with respect to the identity and principal place of business of the manufacturer, processor, producer or packager of the product for resale, which may be shown in either one of the official languages.

But that's from ehow dot com, not anywhere official.

Not official and not even close to correct.

Labelling laws are administered by the Competition Bureau which has pages of qualifications and exemptions. I know because I've had this discussion before. There are people who are convinced that we have bilingual packaging on Blu-rays because it's the law. It isn't...it's a convenience for big studios selling some products in Quebec...not a law.

For one thing, just go to a store and start looking at Blu-rays. I have hundreds of them with no French. Picked up one this morning (DOLLMAN) at HMV.

Find the French.

You can't. There is none in this photo (although, obviously, I do have many others with French on them).

Look at the first two: ON THE RIVIERA and THE HAUNTING. Both are Canadian market discs with Canadian ratings. There is no French. One Competition Bureau exemption for these is that something need not be labelled in French if it's use requires a knowledge of English. Discs with no French language track require a knowledge of Englsh and are automatically exempt. The other discs are imported discs sold in Canada. They are exempt from bilingual labelling.

See that the FOX release of BLOOD AND SAND is bilingual...but the FOX release of LOVE ME TENDER is not. THE BAD SEED is from WB Canada and is unilingual English. The digibooks were all bought at Future Shop in Winnipeg...not a word of French (well "PAPILLON" doesn't count ). Ironically, the movie BETTY BLUE is entirely in French with no English dub...but the package is 100% English (an import bought in Canada from amazon.ca).

Almost all digibooks don't have french, but most come with a different rear cover & UPC glued to the back that is bilingual.

Yes, they change the generic and witten signs into the film, but you have to choose the language in the audio menu for the changes to appear. English is choosen by default. I guess it's seamless branching.

It is. If you lived in France, you could (and most would) initially set up your player to French options for disc menu and playback, so when you put the Blu-ray in, it would automatically play the film with the French render, and disc menus would probably be in French.
