Default PS3 aftermarket fans: Are they worth it?

Ive been reading about heat issues with the PS3 on this board, fortunately I haven't had any problems so far.

I'm buying COD4 this week so I'm thinking about getting an extra fan. Do they work? Are they worth it?

Sorry if this has been posted already but I think its worth revisiting considering the number of posts about this issue.

i was told that any third party material that is not licensed by sony would void your warrenty.

Thanks for the info, eventually the warranty will expire so I would still like to find out what posters opinions are of them.

I'd just hit it with canned air once or twice a month until the warranty runs out. Then get an additional fan and continue to use canned air once or twice a month. The motherboard melted three times in my Sony Vaio, on the third repair (all under warranty, phew!) they told me to use air twice a month since the dust was creating a "blanket" and causing the motherboard to overheat. It works like a charm now, so I recommend using that stuff every now and again!

Thanks for the advice MacDaddyOJack. I also keep the room in the lows 70s so that might help as well. I wonder if part of the heating problems people have been experiencing also has to do with room temperature?

DO NOT BUY THE FAN!!!!!

I've heard they kill the PS3s. If the system needed extra fans the engineers would have added them.

Search this forum for "PS3 died" or something like that. Two people posted last month saying theres died. What did they both have in common... that ghetto fan.

PS3's don't have heat problems.

I've seen one running Fold@Home for 15 days straight. And to my knowledge that is the most taxing on the processor.

The general consensus from blu-ray.com members is that the external fan/cooling units are horrible. If you look over most reviews people do not recommend them. The canned air idea sounds like a good idea, to help keep it dust free. Also to give you an idea of how much a PS3 can take check out the following: http://realtech.wordpress.com/2007/0...s3-in-a-sauna/

Is canned air safe to blow into the vents?

Thanks for the warnings and recommendations. Canned air seems like the way to go. I usually don't play games on the PS3 for more than half an hour to 45 minutes at a time, then I give it a rest. Haven't had any problems with BDs or DVDs no matter how many I watch in a row.

Yeah, just don't hold the can upside-down when you blow it in the vent or you might freeze something!

I don't have a PS3, but for my computer I will blow in all available vents.... you wouldn't believe some of the dust bunnies that come out of there!

There was an article in Edge magazine. They were talking to a third party company who were repairing 360's with RLOD problems. When asked about if the third party fans are any good they said that their crap because your'e now blowing hot air back into your console which is already overheating.

aftermarket fans are a bad idea , certain fans released for the 360 ended up overheating and frying them instead of cooling them down.

i watch 3-4 blu rays a day on my playstation 3 and never had a problem with it over heating.

the playstation 3 is a rock solid product.

Try holding a vacuum cleaner on one end of the vent and the other end with the canned air. At least the dust inside will not just get moved around, the vacuum will suck out the loosened dust.

I'm beginning to sound like the Martha Stewart of Blu-ray.

The compressed air is a VERY recommended idea. I am a systems anaylist and do hardware repair at work and on the side, you would not believe what can happen because of dust. The stuff lays on mother boards like a blanket and I have seen it burn and start to smell. Clean them PS3's guys and gals
