Default Chris Farley exploitation

I saw a DirecTV advertisement recently that featured David Spade and Chris Farley with Farley doing his bit from the "Fat Boy In Little Coat" scene while Spade promotes DirecTV. It made me a bit uncomfortable, thinking that David Spade might be exploiting his friend a bit too much. It just seemed a little over the top to me. Now I keep reading that people are starting to get pretty upset about it, so I guess it wasn't just me.

I saw the ad, and found it in very poor taste.

I don't see what the big deal is. Unless Chris Farley's estate isn't set up correctly, his family is being taken care of.

I kind of went ewwww and really didn't think that Spade would do that in good taste or not given his close personal relationship with Chris but I suppose that enough time has gone by, I was just a little surprise but don't think there's anything "wrong" with it.

It had more a a creepy type of effect on me. It's not the first time scenes from movies have been used for advertising with dead actors. This one however just felt creepy maybe because David Spade was in it as well.

How is it any different from any of the other Direct TV commercials?

I don't think anything is wrong with it.

It's just like the Poltergeist commercial one with the little girl Heather O'Rourke in it.

You mean like the one with Heather O'Rourke (who's also dead)? I dunno, it just seemed kinda wrong. Why would you want to make money off your dead friend? Spade didn't even go to Chris Farley's funeral because he felt so bad...

You obviously didn't watch the child star movie that he was in...

Other than Spade and Farley being best friends when Farley was alive? Not much.

I didn't really think about how they were friends. yea I can see how that can be not in the best taste...

but you guys don't think they were just finding a classic scene from a movie? or do you think they were trying to make it were people would talk about it? haha like we are now

Spade has admitted he did it purely for the money and Farley's family has come out in favor of the commercial. I have no problem with this. They are just using footage of Farley from a movie, and they didn't change his footage to make it appear he is endorsing Direct TV.

I find this much less offensive than when they take a dead celebrity and use CGI to make them endorse a product, like when they had Gene Kelly and took classic footage and interjected new footage with a body double and advertise Volkswagon. On another note, how is this any worse than using a dead celebrity to advertise Rock Band or Guitar Hero?

Edit: Apparently Spade didn't say he did it for the money. I saw a headline that said he did it for the money, but the article doesn't include any actual quote that expresses that.

I didn't think it was in poor taste and I don't see any way Chris' name or image were damaged.

I mean, if this had been Jim Carrey somehow, it would have been offensive because clearly he was a Cable Guy.

Assuming whoever has the rights to Farley's estate/image approved the commercial, I have no real problem with it. Networks make money when they feature a movie with a deceased actor/actress, I don't see why a commercial should be any different.

Totally agree. I doubt I'd be ok with it if it was my family, but as long the Farley estate is getting paid and they've agreed to it, why not?

Does anyone remember the superbowl commercial that had Christopher Reeve standing up at podium talking about how they've found a way to repair spinal chord damage? Even though it was made prior his death, I found that one to be in poor taste, and my father, who's got Spina Bifida and lived his entire life in a wheelchair was actually offended. He understands the spine and nerve damage as much as most Dr's, and realizes how much false hope that commercial gives.

I never saw that commercial but I can see how it could offend and upset someone. That is very bad taste.

I didn't see the big deal for it if the family was okay with it. If anything it is reminding people of Chris Farley and how great he was.

I don't have any problem with this either. It's just the latest of a string of Direct TV ads that takes scenes from popular movies and has one of the characters talk directly to the audience. This one just happened to be from Tommy Boy. It wasn't dead actor Chris Farley, it was the character he portrayed in that movie. As long as his estate is compensated appropriately (and they approved of the usage) I don't see the problem.
