How is this movie and how is the 3D?

It's pretty cheap - available at DDDHouse:

Stars Heather Graham. I haven't seen it, but the reviews aren't too bad on amazon.com. No reviews of the 3D though. This being low budget, I'd also expect a low budget paid for the conversion, possibly mild 3D based on some other low budget films I've seen that were converted. Not sure though, so will be interested to hear how the 3D turns out.

I've come close to purchasing this myself. It also stars Lang Lang as the pianist, not my favorite but he has a lot of fans in the classical world. If you like Chopin, you could hear a worse piano recital.

Also looked into this, having seen it on eBay. Mixed reviews, interesting movie within a movie concept to introduce children to the music of Chopin.

Appears lovers of classical music will enjoy this film more but alas, hard to find comments on the 3D quality. I'm also quite tempted because of the music and appeal of the production values, however, I'm not too sure if it would be too much of a kiddie movie for my liking.

If you have Amazon prime, you can watch the 2d version, free. I went ahead and ordered it so if you're still on the fence when I have it, I'll post my opinion. My opinion may be slightly biased because I am a pianist and I love Chopin.

There's a dialogue-free Polish animated stop-motion short film called The Magic Piano that features on two of the German Best of 3D discs. This forms the basis of The Flying Machine, which simply adds a wraparound story onto it to stretch it to feature length.

The original short is great (and being native, has attractive 3D) but with the cheesy live action stuff added the overall impression is like you are watching an educational installation in a museum. I have the German edition myself, it's English-friendly.

I just finished watching this and will echo what 13thman said. I will add that there were several instances of good negative parallax and the music was excellent albeit rearranged a bit from the original Chopin Etudes.

Bottom line:
1. good 3d
2. good animation sequence. The titles of the Chopin pieces used during this part are displayed in the architecture, some more obvious than others.
3. good music.
4. somewhat boring and clumsy live action sequence.
5. My DDDhouse purchased version came with a slipcover.

Hi Damon

Still on the fence with this one. Maybe because I have a backlog of discs to catch up with.

Is there an English language version? I ask because many eBay descriptions say English subtitles. I just don't see my kids keeping up w/the subtitles and the story. (I assume Heather Graham spoke English in the movie)

The Hong Kong region A release of The Flying Machine In 3D has English Dolby TrueHD 7.1 (Advanced 96K upsampling) and English Dolby Digital EX 5.1 (Matrixed 6.1).

This is really a delight to watch because of the negative parallax. My first viewing was with subtitles which is not the best way to watch this because the subtitles get warped with the images extended out of the screen. The second viewing without the subtitles was much more pleasurable. I wish more 3D movies would be like this.

Good find! Nice to see that the Korean edition is region free.

It's worth restating that the Region B German and Region A Hong Kong editions both include the original English audio and no forced subtitles. I'm sure the Korean edition will not have any issues either.

Push your screen 3D gauge to the max... and try watch it with subtitles... that way the subtitles become over the images most of the time, some other times it doesn't, but improves a lot compared to normal 3D grade.

My spider-man Far From Home has that issue too, i had to do this trick to get the subtitles to "float" on the screen or i would have a eyestrain because of that.

Loved the music and animated sequences, but man were the live action portions a slog to get through, despite Heather Graham. So in the immortal words of Spaceballs, "Prepare to fast forward!"
