Pre-order The Baby Blu-ray
”TRULY ONE OF THE MOST BIZARRE FILMS TO COME OUT OF HOLLYWOOD IN THE 1970S.” An A-list director. A jaw-dropping storyline. And depraved depictions of suburban violence, 70s fashions and ‘sick love’. The result remains one of the most disturbing movies in Hollywood history: Anjanette Comer (The Loved One) stars as an idealistic L.A. County social worker who investigates the case of Mrs. Wadsworth (former ‘50s starlet Ruth Roman of Strangers On A Train fame), her two buxom daughters, and son ‘Baby’, a mentally-disabled man who sleeps in a crib, eats in a high-chair, crawls, bawls and wears diapers. But what secrets of unnatural attachment – and sexual obsession – are all of these women hiding? Marianna Hill (The Godfather Part II) and Michael Pataki (Grave Of The Vampire) co-star in this psychotic stunner from director Ted Post (Magnum Force, Beneath The Planet Of The Apes), now fully restored from the original film negative for the first time ever on Blu-Ray. Very bizarre. I'm surprised its getting a blu-ray release tbh. As someone said before, David Mooney gives a good performance, but I wonder if the blu-ray will have the original or replaced audio. Originally, he made all the cries and other noises. Then his vocals were replaced with that of a real baby and it just didn't work at all.

Why does the announcement say 1981? The film was released in 1973. I wonder if this Blu-ray will have the isolated score like the DVDs?

All this talk about THE BABY and no one has mentioned Ruth Roman's incredible over-the-top performance? This is MOMMIE DEAREST before there was a Mommie Dearest. She's what makes this film memorable.

I was buddies with one of the actors in this film, Mike Pataki. He would always talk about how wonderful this film was and how great the director and actors were. I never could find a copy to watch. Now, Mike is gone, but I have a blu-ray to watch and remember how much fun he had working on this picture.

What an interesting film! I was expecting the focus to be on how weird the baby/man is, but he was the most normal person in the film. There is some sort of meaning behind this movie I think... I can see it as some sort of comment on "women's lib", which was a big issue about the time this film was being made. All of the women are strong and powerful, and all of the men are weak and are treated like objects by the women. There is also a thread about domineering mothers who keep their children helpless contrasted with handicapped people who can't be their own individual self because of their limitations... And the exploitation of handicapped people for their social security checks. Another weird theme is how a child is taken away from his mother by a wife and ends up in the same sort of relationship with the wife as he had with his mother.
So many weird ideas and themes in this movie, it's amazing. I am actually going to watch the commentaries on this over the weekend (I NEVER do that!) This movie would make a great double feature with Spider Baby, which has similar themes but they are played out more for emotion than symbolism the way they are in The Baby. Great transfer. Film-like with nice grain. Good color. I noticed one weird break in the music in the final scene, but that might be part of the movie and not an edit. Well worth getting this blu-ray. |

Can't wait to watch this again. The only time I ever saw this was on VHS like ten years ago. My friends and I rented it based on the intriguing cover image and back description. It was even more weird and wonderful that we could have hoped!
