Default Seat Risers?

Anyone have suggestions on brands/places to buy or are most of you DIY type of people?

Thanks!

I would say these are typically custom built. There are premade ones you can buy, but it's not something that is all that complicated to build, and the room, seating, and screen height determine the required depth and height of the riser.

I would say build them yourself. Really simple and will allow you to get the exact height you want. I really wish I had made mine about 5" taller, lol.

What type of materials do you generally use? I am a novice at this and picking up my seats tonight. I am very excited.

I built 2 platforms using 2"x6"'s and a single 4'x8' sheet of plywood ripped in half. I then carpeted them with the same carpet that I used on the floor. You can see then a bit in this old picture:

Here is a link to a gallery of my ongoing riser build. I usually put in about an hour/weekend. I am almost done though. I wasn't in any hurry.

The materials are 2x4s and 3/4th" plywood will be the flooring. I expect to purchase commercial carpeting. I basically built this using building code (probably excessive.)

What kind of flooring is it going on? Pre-existing flooring like carpet, etc., or an unfinished concrete floor in the basement? If the latter, you need to put a vapor barrier underneath it, or use treated wood for the parts attached to the ground.

You can use 2x4's to 2x12's depending on how high it is going to be. Once it's framed, use some insulation to fill it up (Fill it, but don't stuff it). Use a couple layers of plywood to top it off. Make sure you have a step if it's more than 7 or 8" or so.

A lot of things are dependent on your seats (reclining? Multiple rows? Distance to screen) and the seat height.

I'm going to have these 19 feet back. They are reclining seats from Coaster. Riser height 10" with a second riser of 5" just under the seats is what I was thinking. So I have an interesting conundrum I own 6 of the seats, can fit four together comfortably in the front row. My thought is keeping the 4 together as the front row 12-13 feet back and the second row combine the seats to form a loveseat and have my non-reclining loveseat on the back row as well giving viewing of a maximum of 8 people.

I used this calculator to estimate the riser height. Basically, find the bottom of the screen and make a straight line (i used a long 2x4 because my imagination sucks) and verified the person in the back row could see the bottom of the screen over the heads in the front row.

As far as the width goes; as long as they fit the length of the room and look aesthetically pleasing... When you eventually aim your speakers you will want a general focal point so if some people will be far off to one side (far left or right seat,) their audio/visual experience may (barely) be affected.

I originally had planned 4 seats in the front row with a love seat configuration. However, I decided that I wanted the main listening position to be the audio sweet spot. With an even number of seats, that's probably not an option unless you shift the seats to one side. I ended up going with 2 rows of 3. It depends on what is important to you.
