Question Best full screen (1.78:1 or 1.85:1 aspect ratio) 3D movies - no letterbox black bars

Is there a place on here I can go to see all movie in 3D that are in full screen only? Or can someone list a few for me?

Click "movies" on the top bar, then "Search Reviews" on the side column. Check the "Blu-ray 3D" box. Then for aspect ratio, select 1.78:1 in the drop down menu. Do your search. Viola.

Default Best 3D Blu Rays with no letterbox?

I realize movies are generally made at a ratio that requires black bars on the top and bottom of the screen to display the image in its native form but I really enjoy when I see the rare 3D Blu Ray that takes up the entire TV screen with no black bars. The 3D is just so much more immersive. Are there any 3D Blu Rays like this that can be recommended?

Depends on the genre of movie you might like, but here are a few in 3D that fill up the screen:

Hugo
Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away
Drive Angry
Beauty and the Beast
The Little Mermaid
Pacific Rim

Step Up 3D (dance movie, apparently has really good 3D but the genre's hit-or-miss)
Bait (a thriller about sharks in a flooded grocery store)
Dial M for Murder, the Hitchcock classic
Alice in Wonderland (the live-action stuff is converted and the conversion work is eh, but the movie is largely native 3D CGI)
Journey to the Center of the Earth (Very kiddie-flick sort of movie but great 3D)
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (See above)
Wrath of the Titans (Converted, but much better than its prequel in that department)
Fright Night
Sadako (Only if you don't mind reading subtitles and enjoy laughing at horribly unscary "horror movies")
Tormented (Ditto on the subtitles, though the movie is somewhat better)

All of David Attenborough's 3D nature films are highly recommended and all are 16:9. I hate letterboxing!

How does that work? LOL.

Honestly never even thought about what subs would look like with a 3-D title. I take it they just look super imposed over the closest thing in the picture?

Just never even occurred to me, very curious now.

If done properly they float out further than anything onscreen, changing depending on the content of the shot. On some streaming services (Netflix, etc) they just stay at screen level which can make them impossible to read when out-of-screen effects are used.

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/searc...&action=search

At the top of this page, under the site logo, click "3D Movies".
At the side of the page, click "Search 3D Movies".
Under aspect ratio, select "1.78:1". Make sure "3D" is still checked.
Click "Search".

If you want, you can also run the search with "1.85:1" (if an absolutely filled screen isn't important to you).

Pretty mild 3D throughout. Nothing bad except for a few crosstalk instances with maybe two Sebastian scenes. He ghosts for some odd unknown reason. First time I've ever experienced any anomaly with 3D movies on my tv. YMMV.

I still recommend The Little Mermaid because of the hand drawn art style. Looks like a painting since this wasn't CGI. Nice contrast to the super slick glossiness of newer animated movies. Besides, I wanted to upgrade TLM to blu and having a 3D version is icing.

Has anyone mentioned Life of Pi? That's screen filling. There's that great bit when it goes to Letterbox though for the flying fish and they start coming out of the black bars.

Since I got my 55inch the aspect ratio has not bothered me. I think its size related.

As I'm new to this 3D thing, my new 3D projector arrived today. I'm curious, if I watch the 3D version of a movie that was in 2.35 for 2D, is the 3D version also in 2.35? Or is it resized to 1.85 to fill the screen for the 3D disc?

Not quite... the JVC conversions of I, Robot and Jumper were also reformatted to 1.78:1 from scope versions. Sadly it mostly involved cropping.
