Default XBOX 360 vs. PS3: Power and Speed

Can someone please provide technical specifications of the XBOX 360 (U.S.)and the PlayStation 3 (U.S.)?
I am most interested in the CPU speed -- which will be faster?
I am also interested in (at least) a theoretical comparison of the two systems in terms of raw processing power.
Why do I ask this?
I found out that the XBOX 360 can and DOES play the DVD versions of the laser disc games Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, and Dragon's Lair II: TimeWarp nearly flawlessly!!
The above games suffer from rather long pauses between moves as well as sluggish play on the regular XBOX, with the PS2 able to play somewhat better, but not near arcade perfect.
The makers of the games (Digital Leisure) and the DAPHNE developers (visit www.daphne-emu.com) both report that these games (played on an XBOX 360) is better than ANY DVD player they have ever encountered -- with NO pauses at times! Thank the awesome speed of the 360's CPU for that. So I am wondering.....will the PS3 be even faster, perhaps bringing these arcade classics to total perfection?

Hang on, neither of these titles are games in the sense you mean. They are interactive DVD's. They can be played on any DVD player, the pauses are simply the player picking up the video chapter for the next part of the adventure, depending on what the player chose to do.

Perhaps the 360 is a fast DVD player, so the pauses are short, but it has nothing at all to do with the power of the console.

Yup, more to do with the seek time and data transfer rate of the the DVD drive. PS3's BD drive is fast as hell so no need to worry.

As for which CPU is faster.... Neither, they're chalk and cheese.

A lot of rumors say it only had 2x. A 2x Blu-ray drive makes it slower than the X360's DVD drive. It should be at least 4x if it doesn't want to be laughed by people.

Though to spread optimism, one Sony exec (from the European division I think) was quoted in saying that the PS3 would have a 6x Blu-ray drive by launch.

Such speeds would KILL the X360's optical drive hands-down.....so I'm that Sony would not screw up by releasing a version lower than 6x speed.

BD drive speeds are rated differently than DVD drive speeds.

BD 2x is different than DVD 2x.

DVD at 2x is 2,750 mBps...

BD 2x is 72mbps... Which I'm sure is on-par with, if not faster than the X360 drive.

Also add in that there is a standard HDD which can reduce load times meaning short or no load times at all.

And it does seem a terrible waste of a fine PS3 to play Dragon's Lair on it. Final Fantasy 13, Metal Gear Solid 4, Devil May Cry 4, Gran Turismo 5 etc seem a better use.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but a quick question for Applefiend:

How does a genuine blu-ray movie compare to the movie trailers you can download on Apples website?

I often hook my PC to my LCD to view them (480p and 720p format) and they generally look fantastic, if a little stuttery due to my PC. But do they stand up to a genuine HD movie, or is "the real thing" noticeably better?

thanks.

My PS3 won't be for "Dragon's Lair" and the like alone.......of course I'm going to get some good PS3 titles when available.
It would be interesting to see how the PS3 will do the Digital Leisure titles like "Lair", "Lair II" and "Ace", considering that the XBOX 360 plays them like a dream.
My Mac will be the best laser player, though....with the DAPHNE emulator on board a Mac or PC, it will truly bring me back to those old arcade experiences.

Dpeends on the movie... The best BDs i.e. Stealth, Underworld, Training Day, GN, GL, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, are there in quality, other titles don't always make the bid.

If you compare the best of Blu Ray(Training Day) to the best of high def Apple trailers, Blu Ray is better. And once VC-1 comes online forget about it!

Compared to the data rate of Blu Ray, the data rate on Apple trailers is actually quote low. 9.69 mbits/sec for the memoirs of a geisha 1080p trailer. Blu Ray peaks at 36mbits/sec if I remember right.

Of course bad BD disks always look like crap. Lionsgate BDs look much worse than Apple high def trailers.

You have a point.

However, comparing a 2x Blu-ray drive to the X360's 12x DVD-drive will tell you that the latter will pound it hands down.

Thus, why I said a 4x drive would make it even and a 6x drive would at least kick DVD-drive @$$ pronto.

Or wait.....

wikipedia says (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360) that the 12x DVD-drive of the X360 is pegged at 16.0 MB/s)

What is Blu-ray @ 2x speed again?
