OK, here are 50 or so films/franchises which rank as the best I can think of at the moment. The first two are pretty much cemented at the top, the others sit in my top films list but I'm not really into ordering to that degree so it'd vary any day you ask me. Suffice to say they are all films I enjoy a lot.

1. The Shawshank Redemption
2. Zodiac

The Dark Knight Trilogy (like each equally - have absolutely no preference for any of them over one another)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
The Lord of the Rings trilogy (like The Two Towers the best)
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Memento
Airplane!
L.A. Confidential
Back to the Future
Raiders of the Lost Ark (plus Last Crusade)
Donnie Darko
Casino Royale
Alien and Aliens (love both equally for different reasons)
The Matrix
The Thing
Se7en
Ghostbusters
Predator
Terminator and Terminator 2 (love both equally for different reasons)
Once Upon a Time in the West
The Goonies
Knowing
Das Boot
Inside Man
Pulp Fiction
The Adjustment Bureau
The Quick and the Dead
Taxi Driver
Letters from Iwo Jima
Gangs of New York
Serenity
The Empire Strikes Back
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Star Trek II/Star Trek VI/Star Trek: First Contact
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Tombstone
Big Trouble in Little China
Sherlock Holmes
Blade Runner
Apocalypse Now
The Thin Red Line
Die Hard
The Silence of the Lambs
The Usual Suspects
All the President's Men
The Right Stuff
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Blow Out
Forrest Gump
Titanic

And some top TV:

Firefly
Battlestar Galactica
The West Wing
24
The X-Files
Deadwood
Six Feet Under
Star Trek: TNG
Lost
