Australia Witness (1985)

Picked this up in the B2G1F and 20% off at JB, thought I would post some comments in case others were wondering about the disc.

Basically it's not a new scan but the same HD master used to prepare the R1 CE DVD (even the chapter points are the same). What this means is that there is some EE and some DNR but neither is at distracting levels. The EE does give it a slightly harsher look than it should have though.

But it is a sizeable bump definition wise and colour wise from the R1 CE DVD and considering the price you can get it for, it's a bit of a no brainer IMHO if you like the film.

Audio is a pretty decent lossless track, music benefits the most from the lossless treatment.

Yeah I was disappointed with the release. Zero extras. Lucky I held onto my Special Collector's Edition DVD (picked it up for $3 from EzyDVD back in the day).

The transfer could be a lot better. It's generally hazy with blocky grain, unrefined edges, and very mediocre detail. Some of the daytime stuff looks decent, but the scenes set at night are a mess. Better than the DVD, sure, but a film like this deserves a full remaster.

Paramount has a(n infamous) history with no extras for catalog release in Europe and here though. The US versions always retain the extras (and in the case of the upcoming Sabrina, a widescreen transfer too).
