I saw a commercial last night for the sequel, but I've never seen the original. Should I, is it any good? The original came out too soon after the Spider-Man triology ended, and I was tired of spiders (maybe if they waited another year or two before releasing it). So should I even bother with Amazing Spider-Man, and how does it compare to the Tobey Maguire triology?

It's a pretty decent movie. I just hated the Uncle Ben and Aunt May casting.

I can count 5 different threads on here that don't deserve their own. Plus the topic is somewhat different. I'm asking for a comparison of the two, as well as if I should see the original "Amazing" before seeing the sequel. That's enough to deserve its own thread.

As a lifelong Spider-Man fan, I enjoyed the film a lot.
If you liked the first trilogy, you should give this one a shot. I don't think you'll come away from it feeling like you wasted two hours of your time. It's a bit more serious than the Raimi films, but retains the humor of the character. Garfield is great as Peter, Emma Stone makes you fall in love with Gwen, and the supporting cast of Aunt May, Uncle Ben, Captain Stacy, and Curt Connors are all realized on screen with great actors. It goes a bit in depth into Peter's parents and the mystery surrounding their deaths. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is going to continue that thread, so if you're interested in seeing the sequel, you might want to see the first so you're caught up. While the film does retell Spider-Man's origin, it's not a simple rehash of the same story told in Raimi's first Spider-Man. Even though most people probably know the story of his origin, it feels fresh and is it's own thing. Of course, romance has always been a big part of Spider-Man, and that's the case here. Peter and Gwen have electric chemistry and their relationship works well. No real drama between the two until the end, and Gwen serves as a good compliment to Peter and helps him out instead of being a constant "Mary Jane" (aka damsel in distress.) The film is more grounded. I won't say "realistic" because it's about a kid with spider powers taking on a giant lizard man. But it has the more serious, dramatic tone you would expect from a superhero film in a post The Dark Knight world. The cast, the characters, the storytelling, the special effects, the action, the heart, humor, and drama -- it's all there. I'm not saying "greatest movie ever," but as a giant fan of the character, I love the film. If you're a Spidey fan, in my opinion, it's definitely worth your time. ![]() |
