So true, as I said in the other thread while the video and sound were always good on video and DVD it is spectacular on Blu-Ray, with LA never looking more beautiful at night (can't wait for Collateral though) and the gunfight sounding like a warzone.

It's amazing.

Hi blurayguy-I just want to confirm that you are ireferring to the UK release? I have the US release, and was somewhat underwhelmed. I am familiar with Michael Man's intent to make it looked subdued which fits the overall feel of the film. But a s ahuge fan, I felt the picture was a bit soft and not as crisp as I would have liked. And I've seen some older films that were clearer than this. Thanks in advance for your reply

I have the UK release and thought the transfer could have been better. There seems to be a lack of detail to the image.

Default PQ-AQ Issues

Can anybody confirm if new edition(s) are good? As the 1st edition had some AV quality issues (you can see the reviews on this Form and Amazon US-UK). Want to buy a new copy for me so I am afraid if the issues are still there in new editions.

The only differing release, is the Japanese release. Although sourced from the same master, it is encoded with AVC rather than VC-1, but the PQ is pretty much the same. The Audio is different, not because of the codec, JP release being DTS-HD MA, US/UK release being TrueHD, but down to the mastering, which differs.

Its region free.

Comparison here:

^ Thanks! As the steelbook has been released recently, is there any quality update for that?

You mentioned there is no difference (almost) in PQ but there should be (because of VC-1 and AVC), Is there any screenshot comparison (same scenes) for both versions?

Tech-UK posted the link. It compares the two. Just click an image, then move the mouse pointer on and off the capture for the comparison.

^ Yes I have seen that but not sure if the selected area is just enlarged version (1920X1080) of the preview image or showing US vs JP.

However enlarged version is showing that it is from JP but where is another version image? If the above one, then how we can compare if one is smaller and another is partly enlarged?

Don't click the image. Select one then click 1920x1080 Fullscreen Comparison (top right of the larger image selected). When your mouse is on the fullscreen images that's the VC1, move it off for the Japanese AVC. When the cover image changes in the top left hand corner, you know you're doing it right!

Hover your mouse over the image to go back and forth between the caps.

AVC doesn't always mean better PQ. VC-1 can and does look good.

There is a slight difference in colour and a very slight increase in detail. I don't have the JP disc, so I cannot say what its like in motion.

Yes, already did (just before your message found about the mouseover ) However IMHO the Jp is better in video too. You can see the black levels and the brightness in your uploaded pics.

And the comparison link also suggests to go for JP version (VC-1 is very slightly greenish), only that is the difference.

Thanks to you both!

Another doubt is, I have read that there was AV syncing issue too, somewhere in the mid of movie the dialogues were not matching (lip sync).

You can thank Chip for the well presented examples.

Yes, overall the JP release is superior in both PQ and AQ.

I experienced a lip sync issue with my UK copy. When Vincent is talking to the guy at the scrapyard.

Definitely I would go for JP version, I hope it doesn't have any syncing issue.

It's no different from the UK release, a port of the US disc.
