Interesting. Metrodome only announced a DVD version initially, so it's cool that they've decided to give it a Blu-ray release too. My copy of the Criterion arrived this morning.

Good news, but I'd prefer if Metrodome put out Prince Avalanche on BR too...looks to just be DVD for now but I hope they change their minds!

This is only the second Baumbach film on UK BR right? Would like to see The Squid & The Whale upgraded over here.

Nice!! I'll definitely be getting the Criterion BD. I think it's a cool idea to include the DVD version as well.

Yeah that'll be great for UK folks.. I've heard good things about this movie.. can't go wrong with Paul Rudd

... and yes ... The Squid & The Whale... is an awesome movie / it's a shame that it didn't get a proper release from Sony... the Mill Creek disc is so subpar.

For those who have seen this, is it worth a blind buy during the B&N sales?

I've not seen 'Girls'.

I could say 'Yes, I loved it, buy it!' but that doesn't mean you will. I'm not really sure how people are supposed to answer questions like this given we know nothing about what films you like and whether this might be the sort of film you'll like. Only you know that so you'd probably be better off reading some reviews or watching it before you buy?

I was curious to know who was this Sophie (Greta's best friend) ... interestingly it turns out she's Mickey Sumner... STING's daughter. Cool.

I personally wasn't too fond of it. I found Greta's character to be really annoying so I didn't care too much about her.

I wouldn't say it's a safe blind buy, but if you don't like it you can easily sell it on eBay.
Recently released Criterion's on there seem to go for around £18-25.

It's probably my favourite American film of the year, but can appreciate that some might not like it. Within my circle of friends it was very popular amongst the majority, with one VERY active dissenter who took against it in a big way. He objected to the "privileged middle-class woes" that seem to be perpetuated by a number of the characters, singling out the eponymous Frances for much of his ire, but to see the film in that way is to miss the point entirely if you ask me.

Thanks guys. It's true that I could easily pass it on without losing money due to the B&N half price sale. Think I'll place my second B&N order (now to find what codes still work...)

The codes don't work on Criterion items now.

My favourite film of the year so far. Planning to buy the criterion once I've purchased a multi region bluray player.

I totally agree it reminded me of Damsels in Distress, annoying females who I just wanted to slap

It did feel like what 'Clerks' was for nerds, this was for affluent hipsters (if anybody's seen 'The Comedy' yet, that film is basically the opposite of this). And was very obviously homaging Nouvelle Vague cinema every other frame. And you're right, sometimes you just wanted to shake Frances and tell her to get a grip but I think that was the point of the film - she had to find her own way there.

Not Baumbach's best in my opinion though, I think I even preferred Greenberg - in a way they both come from the same place. I would like to see Baumbach (as well as similar directors like Sofia Coppola) stray from their comfort zone a bit though...it is getting a bit 'tribulations of being privileged' and I'd prefer it to be a little more cultured than that.

I think that's underplaying it a little. It's more of a love letter to French cinema in general. The opening bit feels like Celine And Julie mid-era Rivette, while Rohmer's post-NV moral tales have been cited thoroughly elsewhere. Then there's the bit which is a direct homage to this scene (
) in Leos Carax's Mauvais Sang, while the mid-section of the movie features a relationship that echoes Jules et Jim, which is the most explicit NV moment. For me the greatest allusion towards the NV is in it's cine-literacy. While it lacks the political undertones of the New Wave period (late '58 thru 1964), naturally, Baumbach shares an affinity for, and perhaps even a reliance upon, the existing cinematic image.

Definitely NOT !!

What's with the 'quotes' on the UK edition .... 'Woody Allen meets Girls'.... hell this film is far far from a Woody film. Manhattan - classic / Annie Hall - classic... Francis Ha..... crap. At least Woody has a script often that takes you somewhere - unlike the episodic scenes in here (wow... she's at another apartment now); great music and actors that are lining up to work for him. Frances Ha has no one that you can name. As for 'Comedy of the Year' - who paid for this line ? There are no laughs in this film - unless you think a woman falling down after running is funny. He's Frances dancing..... here is her bedroom.... here is her knocking back a job... here is her travelling to Paris on a credit card ... OMG... this is 'so funny'.

Frances Ha is definitely NOT a comedy - it's a terrible drama of a stupid 27 yr old whom has no idea, and makes rash decisions. Oh... she's 'undateable' - HILARIOUS .. NOT. I gave up around the 60min mark - I would have slapped Frances if I ever met her. Suddenly a B&W low budget film becomes the 'darling' of a few and they then state that's their best film of the year.... obviously they don't get out much.

Rent it first - and see if you can endure this terrible character. Or better - grab GREENBERG and see if you can survive thru that first.

I heard a complaint that it was perhaps a little too close to "Girls", especially with the casting of Adam Driver. From those of you that enjoyed it, is this the case?
