Good news - excellent very early '80's flick with a great soundtrack, and IMHO one of Schrader's best. Glad this is coming out on Blu, since the regular DVD does not look that great on an HD set....

The movie did establish Gere as a sex symbol... but I think the greater contribution was that it was suddenly ok for a man to really care about fashion. I like the art from the movie poster for that reason.
But if they will sell more units by showing off Gere's body... what the hey. Just keep bringing the catalog releases. How it looks on my screen matters way more than how it looks on my shelf. |

Good point. All the more regrettable that they went with that awful late DVD-era beefcake shot instead of the supercool, now-iconic key art.

That said, I work in the industry and I know how uptight the studios have become about certain images--like the cigarette in Julian Kay's hand--in DVD cover art.

I bet the film looks and sounds quite cool again, in terms of style it's very much like Drive. It was a favourite at the time but I don't think I've watched it in a couple of decades. Gere was good, but I really had a bit of a crush on Lauren Hutton at then. Despite the Blondie hit, this was really more of an art house film back then. Schraders regarded it as his homage to Robert Bresson.
I'm not generally bothered about cover art, but this is truly awful. ![]() |

According to this front page site news story this is the main reason we are finally getting a U.S. BLU Release.
https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=15337 Perhaps if Gere, Hutton, Schrader and Bruckheimer all for for the series maybe the BLU will feature some bonus features perhaps new interviews. A commentary from Schrader would be most welcomed. |

No, that's Jim McBride's underrated Breathless, also with Gere.
American Gigolo is my second favourite Schrader flick. It's fab. |
