Default Vudu Launches 4K Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos Video Streams

While it’s awesome that VUDU is offering Dolby Vision 4K streams with Dolby Atmos soundtracks, keep in mind that these streaming Dolby Atmos soundtracks are lossy and not lossless. VUDU core audio for these Dolby ATMOS titles use lossy 7.1 Dolby Digital Plus, then Dolby ATMOS is added to the substream. The advantage of the Blu-ray Dolby ATMOS titles is that the core audio track is lossless 7.1 Dolby TrueHD before the Dolby ATMOS substream is added.

I hope that one day VUDU and Netflix would offer lossless audio tracks that are bit for bit exactly the same as the studio master. More cities are rolling out 100Gbps, 10Gbps, and 1Gbps Internet around the United States. There is plenty of bandwidth for streaming high bit rate 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray images with lossless audio.

Regardless of one’s current Internet speed, companies like Kaleidescape are offering both 1080P and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc downloads with lossless audio that is bit for bit exactly the same as the studio master soundtrack. Last time I checked Blu-ray image downloads are only available for purchase to a large several TB hard drive server. I hope that in the future the option to rent a Blu-ray image for download might become a reality (Say goodbye to REDBOX and Netflix Blu-ray disc rentals if that happens). As hard drive servers become cheaper and as Internet speeds increase, companies like Kaleidescape should become more popular for those consumers that demand the best in picture and sound quality (The only real difference is that one is watching their Blu-ray movies from a hard drive instead of a optical disc, the picture and sound quality is exactly the same).

The quality problem with the HD/UHD digital vendors (with Kaleidescape being the exception) stems from the additional compression and other algorithms applied to the standard, high quality mezzanine master deliverable they receive from content creators. Quality wise, the mezzanine file is the same as the file delivered to a replicator for Blu-ray replication. The replicator file differs from the digital vendor deliverable which does not include menus, extras, bonus features, coming attractions, etc. that are included on the physical media. Kaleidescape does not add additional compression, so they are delivering (for all practical purposes) the high quality mezzanine file to the Kaleidescape end user. The same file used to create the Blu-ray rental copy that Red Box (some content owners lock out the bonuses and extras and some do not) vends via kiosk is what you receive as a purchased digital download from the Kaleidescape store.

The rest of the digital (streaming/downloading) vendors modify the mezzanine so they can deliver a stream to the end user at a bit rate low enough and variable to accommodate the end users internet conditions. As far as I have been able to determine, they do not put much effort into providing a higher quality deliverable for download. (Connection speed is not an issue with the quality of a download. It just affects how long it takes to complete it.)

So, while the other digital vendors could match Kaleidescape download quality, they don’t. It might be that your average digital consumer values price and convenience higher than quality, so they don’t bother.

The Kaleidescape owners place highest value on quality and convenience, while price would be last on their list. These are very high end custom installations, but Kaleidescape intend to broaden their target market with an under $1000 solution as early as 2016. I have no doubt that they will maintain their high level of quality with their lower tier product. The question is: Will the rest of the digital vendors match them?

Kaleidescape does not currently offer streaming, but they plan to. Will they have a better solution than the other digital vendors?

While they do not currently offer 3D, they have promised to include it with an update in the not too distant future.

The Kaleidescape threads at the bottom of the post are current. Questions about the 4K Strato and the Encore line are answered by a Kaleidescape insider.

Kaleidescape uses an LG OLED display at CEDIA for their award winning Ultra HD HDR player. The audio on the download includes lossless audio codecs such as DTS HD MA, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-X and Dolby ATMOS. The Kaleidescape product was Best of Show. This is the future of home entertainment. The Sony catalog of UHD movies will be available through the Kaleidescape movie store.

The Kaleidescape DV700 Disc Vault looks interesting. If they release an Ultra HD Blu-ray version of it I think I may make it the main player, I could get a player for the other room if it all works how I think it does.

The ideal Kaleidescape server solution should allow for consumers to use external USB 3.1 and USB 3.0 hard drive enclosures that are 6TB, 8TB, and larger.

A low cost Kaleidescape server for under $1,000 (perhaps even one day under $500) could be made even more popular if consumers could add their own third party hard drives either internally or externally. There are some nice USB 3.0 external hard drive enclosures that will accept a SATA 3 7,200rpm Enterprise quality hard drive that is 6TB, 8TB, or larger. All the Kaleidescape system needs is to encrypt any external hard drive that a consumer adds to the system on the USB 3.1 or USB 3.0 port. With several USB 3.1/3.0 ports a consumer could easily add over 20TB worth of storage.

Allowing the Kaleidescape system to use third party hard drives brings more choices to the consumer with a lower cost solution for Blu-ray image storage.

Also allowing for Blu-ray rentals for around $5.99 would make the system more popular. Once a consumer starts watching the downloaded Blu-ray rental movie it would be available for 24 to 48 hours. After the rental period is over the movie would be automatically deleted from the hard drive. Maybe an onscreen menu option would pop up with the option to purchase the movie to own after one watches the Blu-ray rental.

While quality parity with physical media (BD/UHD BR) is a major selling point, the system adds a high level of convenience for collectors of physical media.
Once their discs are loaded into the vault, they have many options via the user interface for selection and playback. Being able to skip all the warnings and coming attractions and going straight to the movie appeals to me. And with scripting, you can put a custom presentation together for playback.

The question is, how much of this functionality can they put into a low price point system?

Kaleidescape is a member of VIDITY, so what you suggest seems very likely.

I am really interested in this, I just hope that the price is reasonable.

I'll have to check HCC comments when the 4K UHD Strato is released 1st Qtr 2016. No disc drive. Kaleidescape insider says they will wait to see if their is a viable market for Ultra HD Blu-ray before they release a unit with a disc drive.

"Kaleidescape Alto and the Kaleidescape Disc Server are available now. Kaleidescape Terra will be available in November. Kaleidescape Strato will be available in the United States, Canada, and U.K. in early Q1, 2016. In the United States and Canada, the Strato MSRP will be $4,495 for the model with an internal 6 TB hard drive, and $3,495 for the model with no internal movie storage."

VUDU is going to deliver these 4K UHD Dolby Vision HDR movies with ATMOS audio to you at 11+ Mbps.

http://www.watchvudu.com/uhd/#lp-pom-block-153

I'll wait for the Kaleidescape $1,000 solution. I consider myself fortunate since I have no emotional attachment to the media I get my movies on. If the content providers could provide the highest available quality by pounding on jungle drums, I would buy a jungle drum, plug my high speed HDMI cable in to it and be perfectly happy.

Agreed. This seems like a lot of cash for a glorified computer hard drive that can only serve one real purpose. I guess if you had some terminal disease that meant you could not actually get out of your bed to select a disc off of the shelf and put it in a player, then it would be an excellent idea. Plus, when you do finally kick off, you could be buried with it, obviously providing a cut-out space for it in your luxurious customized coffin.

Anyone know where some of these VUDU UHD titles are? I saw Fury Road, The Hangover Trilogy, Vacation, and a few others listed, but they're not showing up on the VUDU app on the Roku 4. The only ones I see are the original 12 plus Get Hard.

If you want to see them in Dolby Vision, you need a Vizio Dolby Vision TV.

http://www.dolby.com/us/en/brands/dolby-vision.html

Stream Dolby Vision Content

Content mastered in Dolby Vision will be available first on streaming services like VUDU. Use the app on your Dolby Vision enabled TV to watch the latest movies.
