I figured I'd buy both cuts in their 3D versions anyway so no big loss for me. Best about the Theatrical and Extended Editions is they each have completely different extras.

The words There and Back Again remind me of the way they continue to release one version of the film followed by the extended cut in November..just like Lord of the Rings... why not just have them both on release..oops greed, money , corporate people...
I forgot about that.

25 minutes seems like a lot, the movie dragged a bit already but I'll probably get it. How many minutes was added to the first one? Btw?

I'm really enjoying these films so I welcome an Extended edition. It helps to know they're coming anyway

I'm sorry you felt that way. Most people I know who saw this movie and are huge Middle Earth fans loved this movie to the fullest and couldn't wait to see whats in store for the EE.

Maybe the 25 minutes they add to it may make you think otherwise of the movie.

Movie was already long enough. But I don't mind a longer cut. Watching at home anyways so I have all the time.

I feel mixed about it.

It did feel a little bloated (as did the first movie), but I am a fan so it didn't bother me really. I am curious what they add for the extended as I don't think it added much for the first movie.

By contrast, with LOTR the extended seemed to add a lot and those movies didn't feel bloated to me.

I can't wait to buy this (or the inevitable box set, which I hope comes in 3D)! I made a mockup of it a while back as well:
