Default FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD (1967) Warner Archive

Warner Archive has announced 1967's "Far From the Madding Crowd" for release on Blu-ray

This was an MGM Roadshow presentation and is quite beautiful to look at. A blu-ray should do the cinematography justice

Every time I see this, it's stuck since I saw Davis say he loved it and wrote it about it

Hopefully they will be using the fruits of the digital fim restoration recently done by Studio Canal and the BFI; scanned at 4K and restored at 2K from the original 35mm negatives. If so, this should look sublime.

I would have thought with the remake out this year they would have granted this a normal release

There is some lovely cinematography in this film. If WA does their usual good job, this should look amazing on blu.

At last - this SHOULD look spectacular in Hi-Def. looks like Warner are doing the film justice after previous DVD crops and cuts

Like a lot of brits my age, I covered the book as a teenager at school during eng literature lessons and it's a good story. For this film adaption, Julie Christie received flak for having the wrong hair colour but she played Bathsheba pretty close to the written word IMO

I like Warner's attitude to these classic 60's and early 70's films, this should be a good watch as I've held off from purchasing any of the DVD editions

This is done by Warner Archive (not Warner) and they have released some well restored classic films on blu ray. I am a huge fan of Warner Archive!
Warner does not do many restorations on their older films. They have been a big disappointment in their blu ray releases (using older transfers).

Default This was a Cinerama 70 presentation once!

I saw this picture in our local Cinerama, ultra large and curved, 70 mm screen back in the 60's.

Neither me nor anyone of my movie buffs acquaintances ever knew that studios were blowing up 35 mm negatives in the heydays of Cinerama 70.

It is also probably the reason why we look at these movies today and remember them as Cinerama or 70 mm films.

I haven't seen this film ever since, and I wonder how good it will look now in our hi-def TV screens. We also look forward to see how well they will recover the original 35 mm negative to Cinerama brilliance, if that is at all possible.

Any word if this is still on schedule for the February 10 release date?

Amazon still has this date, but when I placed my pre-order it gave me an estimated ship date of mid-March. This is all happening rather quick from announcement to release date, especially when the original announcement of this site had "later this year". I wouldn't be surprised if it was delayed, but fingers crossed otherwise.

I'm not sure that it's correct to describe it, in the review, as though it was a traditional MGM production. It was an independent production, financed in part by MGM who only distributed it in the U.S. In the UK it was distributed by Anglo-Amalgamated.

Yes, the phrasing could be better. I've adjusted it. Thanks for pointing it out.
