France The Sound of Music

Robert Wise's The Sound of Music (1965) has received a preliminary release date for the Gallic markets: September 16th. Winner of five Oscar awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Liz Burroughs:
Quote:
Never seen it in the cinema? Think its not worth seeing on the big screen just because it's on TV every Christmas? Think again. Miss it and miss out on seeing the most successful movie musical of all time (and 1965 best picture Oscar winner) the way it was meant to be seen: on a wide screen. Filmed on location in Salzburg Austria, director Robert Wise (Double Oscar winner for both this and West Side Story) transforms the hit Broadway play using the spectacular scenery of Austria as a backdrop.

The Sound of Music still ranks as number five in the all time box office ratings and was on general release in the USA for four and a half years.

The success of this film has meant that there are few people who do not know the stunning opening sequence or the words to at least some of Rogers and Hammersteins' songs: `Do-ReMi', `The Sound of Music' and `Edelweiss' (which was perceived by many to be an authentic Austrian song).

Following the apparantly true(ish) story of The Von Trapp family singers, the film begins in Nonnberg Abbey, Salzburg where the young Maria is hoping to become a nun. A hopeless failure, she leaves to become nanny to the nightmarish Von Trapp children. In true Mary Poppins style, the family are soon won over and all looks rosy, until the Nazis arrive. The story has survived original adaptation from an autobiographical book, into a German film (Die Trapp Familie), then into the Rogers and Hammerstein Broadway show and finally to Hollywood. The strength of the story has been the major factor in its success in each of these forms.

Julie Andrews is perfect in the role of Maria and was unlucky to miss out on winning the year's Oscar for best actress. She is backed up by an impressive supporting cast including Christopher Plummer, Eleanor Parker, Richard Haydn and seven `adorable' children.

Do not be put off coming to see this film because it is the film it is. If you do make the effort to come you will not be disappointed. Be prepared to be entertained from beginning to end by the unique combination of a strong and moving story, great acting and direction and a particularly impressive score.

That is wonderful to hear about that. I can't wait to see it in high definition. I wondered what master that it comes from and not a peep for the USA?

The one thing that however I find kind of bothersome was that the film Romanticized the Austrians, and portraying the Germans as the evil Nazis. The Austrians were as responsible for it as the Germans were, they just played a little innocent. Adolph Hitler was NOT a German, he was an Austrian himself. But I guess we have to think it was only the fault of Germany.

Edit: I didn't realize that this is actually a theatrical rerelease and not about the blu ray of The Sound of Music. Sorry about the misunderstanding.

Hitler may have been born in Austria, but he was a German citizen before taking power--much less the Anschluss. Though some Austrians wanted union with Germany before it happened, Hitler pretty much forced it on them by sending in troops a month BEFORE holding a referendum stacked in his favor. Real Austrians, like the von Trapps and their friends, didn't want it at all.

Hitler left Austria at as a young man as he hated his own country and fought in the GERMAN Army in the First World War. He was elected Reichskanzler in Germany and not in Austria and the Anschluss was forced upon Austria by military invasion. Austria was thus the first victim of Nazi aggression and suffered immensely under Nazi occupation.

This is going to sound like conspiracy, but I think there is a conspiracy to it.

Their governments were actually their own allies, doesn't mean that their leaders give a crap about their citizens. If they were to follow the "superior race" that Hitler speud out, (Literally) Hitler would have been long dead and classified the Austrians just as they would do to anyone that is a "lesser" race. Wasn't it the "superior" race was Blue eyed, Blonde, small nose, tall, which he would fail in categories involving height, big nose and brown Hair. Don't you think there is some conspiracy to it?

I think they were apart of the whole thing, just like France, which was actually an Axis nation until the end of the war. Again doesn't matter of the citizen's agenda, but those that control it. I think there is a reason why Swisterland was a neutral nation, so the Nazis could hide their Gold from Allied forces or others including their own allies from taking it. A way to help keep themselves rich again.

Again Conspiracy ideas from me, but I think they are working together.

And the artwork for the Reversed Combo (I'm guessing it's the DVD packaging with 1 DVD and 2 BDs):

I do have to say that this looks really impressive, particularly the restoration work. I've never been a huge fan of it growing up, but I might have to pick this up once prices go down a little bit (it's still $30 up here in Canada pre-order I believe).

I have loved this movie from the first time that I saw it many, many years ago. Any idea what the Target book edition region code will be? I know that it is listed as Region A, but that sometimes changes after the release of the movie.

Thanks

The disc states Region ABC (you can't trust it, but considering it's a worldwide release, I don't think they'd lock this baby):

Pic of the case and the slip:

The DVD comes in a transparent disc sleeve inside the case, I hate how Fox keeps doing this. Why not use 3-disc cases or just not include the DVD...

Thanks for the input - now I just have to find out if the AMZ.de is a single BD, 2 BDs, or 2 BD+ the DVD. The site has no indication

If it was the 2 BD or the 2BD + DVD, then 14 Euros would be great ($20).

We will see!

Quick (and hopefully easy) question: I see no standard-DVD release for the 45th anniversary edition. I'd like to purchase the standard version for a friend who doesn't have a Blu-ray player.

Does the 1 standard-edition DVD that's included in the "2 Blu-ray + 1 DVD" packaging contain the movie and any special features that may be limited to the Blu-ray edition? My guess is that it may contains the movie, but no special features.

I've researched every site I can find, but haven't found an answer.

Thanks for any help or insight!

SERIOUSLY?!?! You are friends with someone who doesn't have a Blu-Ray player? What's wrong with you!?!

I hope this is one of the Target exclusives that go on sale like Gone with the Wind and Wizard of Oz did last Black Friday. That's the only reason I went out Black Friday of 09'. Everything else was Amazon and a couch.
