The series was only six episodes, so two per tape.
Looking on eBay right now--they don't seem to be especially rare or valuable, in about the $10-$15 range. And I agree with zrdb: unless you're looking for them specifically as collector's items, the Bandai/Image DVD set is still widely available (and the show looks great on it). I did not realize this was available on DVD.. I only saw this VHS randomly and picked it up. There are plenty of titles that did not make it to DVD that can only be found on VHS or LaserDisc so I thought this was one since the BD release is more of a movie than individual episodes.

As someone else stated, 3 volumes total with 2 episodes per tape.
I bought all 3 volumes in mint condition for about $25 total, so I don't think they are especially rare. Though I don't collect VHS normally, I love this series and couldn't pass up that deal. The US BD release is a 90-minute movie cut down from the 3-hour running time of the original OVA. The original 6 episode version is available on Japanese Blu-ray though it has no English subs. However, the series is easy to find online to watch for free with subs, so you can just watch it online to know what's going on, then watch the Japanese BD and just enjoy the animation. Or if you're savvy, you can add your own subtitles. |

I held on to my Japanese set because the American DVD edition had an audio edit in the first episode (the background music was replaced during the training montage because they were afraid it was too similar to the music from Chariots of Fire) and the Japanese set has an additional disc with more extras (like the non-letter boxed version of the last episode and an early work print of episode 5 with some surprisingly detailed nudity that got cut). I've been tempted to pick up the US set just to have the English subtitles though.

First was U.S. Renditions at $34.95 a tape, in a plastic clamshell (except V1 sometimes, see below): V1: Eps 1-2, Released 1990-02-01, SKU USR-VD1 V2: Eps 3-4, Released 1991-08-01, SKU USR-VD3 V3: Eps 5-6, Released 1991-12-01, SKU USR-VD5 and then again by Manga Entertainment at $19.95 a tape in a paper sleeve, around 1996 (I don't have exact dates): V1: Eps 1-2, SKU 800-636-235-3 V2: Eps 3-4, SKU 800-636-237-3 V3: Eps 5-6, SKU 800-638-305-3 All of these releases are subtitled only. Manga had announced a dubbed release that was supposed to start in June 1996 for $12.95 a tape, but it was cancelled when they discovered the M&E tracks were gone. Both of these releases feature the original, unedited music, but do feature the nudity edits. (the only release exempt from those is the original Japanese VHS release) In theory, there may have been some sort of bundle of Gunbuster V1 and Dangaio V1 from U.S. Renditions in September 1995, but I don't have any real info on this other than an old catalog listing. V1 of US Rendition's release of Gunbuster actually had 3 distinct packaging styles. It originally shipped in a clamshell case with no UPC, and had a white box around the "US Renditions" logo. Later, when V2 and V3 came out with updated packaging with a UPC code and a larger, box-less logo, V1 was re-released to match. Finally, at some point, V1 was rereleased in a cardboard sleeve, presumably at a lower cost. To the best of my knowledge, neither V2 nor V3 were ever released this way. Here is the "white box" style: ![]() The updated "boxless" style: ![]() And the paper sleeve: ![]() (note: not my pictures) EDIT: Just saw this thread was 9 years old… oops.
