Anyway, this has my interest slightly as it looks slightly fun compared to the usual period-set biopic. I often loathe Cumberbatch in lead roles but he is starting to play more interesting parts. |

I really only became unware of this film because The Guardian had an article on it about how the filmmaker were determined to use real cats in the film and not CGI and went into the difficulties of getting felines to actually do what you want.
Like Rapta, I don't care for Cumberbatch in lead roles (though he has shined in numerous supporting roles), but he is very charming in this and his character fits him like a glove. Claire Foy is charming in it too, the first time she has impressed me. I've long been an Andrea Riseborough fan - she never disappoints. I wish I'd liked the film more than I did but it had a lot going for it. Glad to see it getting a physical media release - it is also a ravishing look production. |

I don’t think it’s as strong as other recent Cumberbatch roles (most notably The Power of the Dog), but the stylisation of the biopic is pretty unique, it seems like a fascinating artist and the cinematography and 1.33:1 frame is painterly and absolutely gorgeous. I think it could be compared a little to The Personal History of David Copperfield for its period setting, quirkiness, collection of well known British actors, comedic set pieces but also serious observations on what it means to be alive. Unfortunately I think trailers before films that never come and finding it hard to find screenings is the current state of the cinema industry. I should note this isn’t Will Sharpe’s only new release, as he recently directed Landscapers with Olivia Colman and David Thewlis for television. |
