Default The Six Million Dollar Man = The Six Billion Dollar Man movie (Mark Wahlberg)

Quote:
Is Universal Trying to Make Mark Wahlberg the “Six Million Dollar Man”?

http://www.tracking-board.com/tb-exc...on-dollar-man/

We’re hearing that Mark Wahlberg will star in Universal Pictures’ film remake of the 1970s sci-fi TV series THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN. The story follows an astronaut, Steve Austin, whose body is rebuilt with cybernetic technology after a traumatic injury from an aircraft crash.Peter Berg is attached to produce and possibly direct if the project comes together. Harvey Weinstein is also attached in some producing capacity.

It’s been a long road to the “Six Million Dollar Man” movie. Kevin Smith wrote a draft of a screenplay for it in the mid-90s, which he eventually turned into the comic book “The Bionic Man.” In 2003, Jim Carrey was attached to star in a comic take on the concept from writer-director Todd Phillips, but the project never materialized. And as early as 2006, original series star Richard Anderson confirmed that he was involved with plans for a “Six Million Dollar Man” remake, which was bogged down in negotiations between Universal, which owned the rights to the TV series, and Miramax, which owned the rights to the Martin Caidin novel, “Cyborg,” on which the series was based. (It appears that when Weinstein sold the company, he retained the rights to “Cyborg.”)

Nevertheless, the rights disputes seem to have been mostly worked out by 2011, when it was announced that Leonardo DiCaprio was in talks to star in the film, with Brian Singer directing. The screenplay of that iteration of the project was written by “Shrek Forever After” scribe Darren Lemke. Unfortunately, plans fell through once again–but apparently neither Universal nor Weinstein has lost the desire to bring “Six Million Dollar Man” to the big screen.
Good thing they're updating the money value. Today all $6 million gets you is a mediocre starting pitcher.

Inflation-wise it should be $32,148,648.65 Man, btu I guess that doesn't roll quite as well of the tongue.

For years, that bit of Carrey/Weinstein stubbornness over the Caidin book kept the original Lee Majors series off of DVD.
Good thing they eventually got the disk boxsets out between never-happening projects.

Why not just get Jonah Hill to write this and make it a comedy like Jump Street while they are at it!

I have no issue with Wahlberg but I think the time for this has passed. Given all the cyborgs in movies over the past 30 years, what are they going to do that is different? it will be just another movie trying to make money off of its name.

I would like Hollywood to adhere to that reasoning and avoid a million remakes and reboots but that doesn't seem to be the case

I have no problem with remakes as a lot of good films are remakes but it is the useless remakes that annoy me. How would this film be any different than say Robocop? What, different look for the character? And they just remade that! Had they done this film just after the series was made, that would be one thing as it would have been somewhat unique but that isn't the case anymore. And didn't they already do a film based off of "Cyborg" before the series? It will be another $150 million movie that dies a quick death at the theatre.

Sounds like you're not particularly interested in this remake and have deemed it a lost cause. But under your reasoning, they've done cyborg movies or superhero or horror movies so why bother with the genre. Robocop has a completely different look and plot from the Six Million Dollar Man so I wouldn't say been done before. I personally find all endless reboots and remakes uninspiring even though you might think they're "good."

Honestly, I wonder sometimes why they bother making new movies like this since so many of the movies are bad.

The basic plot of this and Robocop are the same - military/law enforcement guy get injured, only way to save him is to add robotics so he becomes part man/part machine and needs to learn to adjust to that. For a series, it is a good idea since you can really develop the character, what he goes through, how people react to him, etc. For a movie, it is going to look like Robocop but with the military instead of police. Remember all those action movies that came out after Die Hard that were basically Die Hard but they moved it to a different location so it was fresh and exciting?

Right - hes a TERRIBLE actor in every way imaginable. hes proof that UNtalented people can and do make it big in Hollywood.

Even if they cast it correctly.... what the hell could this film bring to the table?

We can recap the plot now:

1) Dork pilot gets injured in some accident which of course is a cover up or whatever.
2) Dork gets all new limbs from some "mean and greedy" corporation thats working with the military on some new secret thing.
3) Dork is now a bad a$$ and there will be a "montage" of rescues, beating up bad guys, etc, etc.
4) Meets a "hooker with a heart of gold" type of chick who understands him.
5) A one hour long, ball-numbing CG action/fighting scene amongst buildings so lots of stuff gets smashed and stuff.
6) Sequel gets set up.

There ya go. That'll be 95% accurate or better if they do it.

I think these days it costs $6 million for going into Hospital emergency with the broke leg and that doesn't include the $1 million for the ambulance to take you the 5 miles to the hospital.

They should use Dwayne Johnson, Now he can play any role.

I'm glad Jim Carey is not attached to this film. When he was attached to it, it created a shitload of backlash against the studio ... Mark Wahlberg is a step up. Personally, I think Robbie Amell, Kellan Lutz, Peter Facinella would be better choices for the lead role.

As long as Lee, Lindsay & Richard make a cameo I'll be happy.
