Most of us know the 2nd coming of HD DVD is the HD51 disk. A 3 layer trinity of 17 GB discs, instead of the usual 15 GB disc. It seems this one will remain buried in the foreseeable future.
We all wonder about rumors that current BD players can not be firmware upgraded to play a 4 layer BD100. Assume for the moment that is true. Also stands to reason it would be true of the HD51 and their players. Dual layer is the key here as even the hope of a triple layer BD75 may be unplayable. Apparently the problem is going beyond a second layer without making a boat load of "coasters" in the process. Is it not true our own BD25 has been tweaked to 30 or 33 GB? Wouldn't it be more reasonable to presume that a firmware update could make this disc readable on all existing players? Furthermore, a dual layer BD60 is conceivable. Sure, it's "only" a 10 GB gain. Only 9 GB more than the "ever threatning" HD51, but it is enough to shut them up. No bragging rights for "highest capacity discs" for them. I say we need better dual layer technology. It may not be the answer we want, but an answer we can live with. BD60 is still twice the capacity of a dual layer HD DVD. Last edited by tron3; 12-12-2007 at 09:28 PM. |

However I believe it will end up being true (player upgrade) for the high capacity blu-ray discs as well. I don't really see 1gb as bragging rights or a huge advantage at all. Especially if it requires a player upgrade. We still have way more studio support and a better selection of movies. The paramount deal hasn't exactly made a difference so I doubt they will be able to sway WB to an exclusive deal. They can't do any Steven Spielberg movies which is a huge disadvantage to universal as the Jurrasic Parks would be huge sellers. Plus regardless of what the media "spin" is people are using the ps3 as a standalone player or as a center piece of their home theater so blu-ray's install base is over double that of HD-DVD even if you handicap the ps3 sales with the "only 40% of ps3 owners even know its a HD blu-ray player" Found it http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/01...ts_51gb_hddvd/ Quote:

your titel confuseses me but with blu-ray orgininaly its was 27 gigs a layer but with the hard coting it is 25 gigs a layer what hd dvd did with the 17 gig layer is very much to what it did with the hd dvd-ram format(20 gig a layer but 100% will not work in current drives)

There is a company (hitashi ? not sure) that is working on a 4 layered 100GB Bluray disc that will only need firmware upgrade. They said they are currently working on stabilizing the laser penetration to the deeper layers. I don't know when that would come out as that was back in October and since then, nothing has been said.
